Howard E. Witter, age 88, passed away Friday, June 3, 2016 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 22, 1928 in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late Irvin and Helen Miller Witter. Howard grew up on Shimpstown Road with his parents and sister, Esther.
Howard was a graduate of the Mercersburg High School in 1946. After graduation, he helped his father on the family farm. On March 31, 1951, Howard married Geraldine Statler in the Greencastle Church of the Brethren. Howard enjoyed wood working and construction so he formed a contracting partnership with his brother-in-law, J. Albert Metcalfe, known as Metcalfe & Witter Construction. After J. Albert's retirement, Howard started his own contracting business, Howard E. Witter Construction. Howard built many homes throughout Mercersburg and the surrounding towns. Following his retirement in 1991, Howard enjoyed wood working and building furniture for his family and friends. He had the ability and vision to fix and create many things. He also enjoyed traveling very much and managed to visit all fifty states with his wife Geraldine. Howard enjoyed vacationing and fishing with his family on Chincoteague Island. He was a member of the Brethren Fellowship Church of Chambersburg and the Mason Dixon Travelers Club.
Surviving family include his wife of 65 years, Geraldine Statler Witter; a son, Timothy G. Witter and his wife Linda of Mercersburg. Also surviving Howard are two grandchildren, Leah M.Witter of Baltimore, MD and Nathaniel G. Witter of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, Esther Mae Metcalfe of Mercersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Brethren Fellowship Church of Chambersburg at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 8th with Pastor Manny Diaz officiating. A viewing Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. Burial will take place at the Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
