Kenneth Potthoff Obituary

RAPID CITY - Kenneth George Potthoff, 77, Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at his residence in Rapid City.

Ken was born June 15, 1933, in Rapid City to George and Alma (Dohrman) Potthoff. He graduated from High School in June of 1953. After high school, Ken served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. After his stint in the military, Ken continued his education at St. John's University in St. Cloud, Minn.

Ken went to work at Boystown in Omaha, Neb., from 1960–1962; he then moved to Newark, N.J., and worked for Newark Catholic Charities from 1962–1969; then worked for the Newark Board of Education from 1969–1997, retiring on July 1, 1997. Ken moved to Rapid City in 2006 to be closer to family.

Survivors include two sisters, Gladys (Terry) Olson, Grand Junction, Colo., and Fern (Floyd) Cobler, Rapid City; three brothers, Howard (Glenda) Potthoff, Rapid City, Donald (Darlene) Potthoff, Black Hawk, and Frank Potthoff, Rapid City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Potter; and a brother, Marvin Potthoff.

Memorial services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 2, at Kirk Funeral Home with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.

Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
