Calvin Reed Obituary

NEW UNDERWOOD - Calvin E. Reed, 76, New Underwood, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home.

Calvin was born Dec. 18, 1934 on his grandparents Claude and Maude Reed's homestead, where his parents Elvin and Helen, had built a small house.

On Sept. 18, 1940, he was joined by baby sister, Janice Annette. He grew up in the New Underwood area, attending New Underwood High School.

He was a very good artist, especially portraits. When he was 15-years-old he drew and painted the first "Keep South Dakota Green" sign which was along Highway 14-16 in New Underwood.

Upon returning home, he married Oriette Swenson of Langford and they had two sons, Cyle and Colin.

Calvin traveled the United States going through all 50 states making his way with his art and all the different jobs he held. He returned to New Underwood in his later life to be near family.

Calvin loved to read and also wrote articles for the New Underwood Post, expressing his views - he liked to get people to think.

He is survived by his sons, Cyle Wold, Florence, Mont., and Colin Wold, Helena, Mont.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice (Donald) Jensen, New Underwood; three nieces; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Calvin taught me that if a day goes by and you don't learn something new-it was a wasted day. A wise man with always colorful stories to tell. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Cal was a friend to my Dad and a portrait he drew of my father hangs in my livingroom. He captured my father to a T. I sincerely hope that his family finds peace and comfort in the days ahead.
