Dorothy West Obituary

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Dorothy M. West, 73, Sioux City, died Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the Sunrise Retirement Community.

Dorothy was born Dec. 4, 1937, at Watertown, S.D., to Alfred and Leone (Griner) Jacobson. She grew up in the Watertown area, later moving to Rapid City, S.D., where she met Harold West.

She was a very loving mother of four children when she married Harold West June 26, 1971, in Rapid City. In 1974, they were blessed with a third daughter, Malina. In 1989, Jason came into Dorothy's life and became another beloved child.

Dorothy worked at 200 Maple Place in Watertown for 15 years where she was a caregiver.

It was Dorothy's passion to be the best mother she could be. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy also enjoyed horses, music and dancing. She loved playing the guitar and piano and spent many hours of her free time crocheting and knitting. Dorothy had a personal relationship with her savior, Jesus. Her family was her whole life.

Survivors include her husband, Harold of Sioux City; her children, Luanne (Gary) Thovson of Hermosa, S.D., Jeff (Stacey) Bohlmann of Watertown, Debbie (Hal) Becker of Wells, Minn., Joey (Mary) Bohlmann of Belle Fourche, S.D., Malina (Matt) Ard of Sioux City, and Jason (Cassie) Kasparek of Watertown; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Faye) Jacobson of Franklin, N.C.; a sister, Marj (Ray) Muller of Watertown; and a sister-in-law, Kit Jacobson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Cheryl Kasparek, Alan Jacobson, Neal Jacobson, Marion Randall and Marlys Jacobson.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the staff at the Bernstein Unit at the Sunrise Retirement Community for the excellent care given to Dorothy.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Pastor Roger Spahr officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.

Hi Harold and Family, So sorry to hear about Dorothy. I'm sure you remember me. My son Dan is the one playing spiderman in your yard and fell out of the tree and broke his leg. You guys took great care of my children. I'm happy to hear that she had a personal relationship with our savior. You are all in my prayers!! God Bless Ruth
