Joyce Johnson Obituary

HURON - Joyce Hattie Johnson, 80, Huron, died Tuesday May 10, 2011, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center.

Joyce Hattie Brooks, the daughter of William L. and Mary E. (Liddle) Brooks, was born April 16, 1931, in Iroquois. She attended school in the Iroquois area. Joyce married Richard Bonnes on Sept. 13, 1947, in Huron. They had six children. Joyce worked as a waitress for Cub Lunch and various other restaurants. She also worked at Ravens Inc., in Huron and managed a greenhouse. On Nov. 14, 1980, Joyce married Edward Johnson in Huron.

Joyce enjoyed cooking, fishing, camping, reading and travelling. She loved to travel to Oregon and visit the ocean. Joyce loved to garden and could grow anything. She was Tiger Woods' biggest fan.

Grateful for having shared in Joyce's life are her two sons, Michael Bonnes of Huron, and Gerald (Edna) Bonnes of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Kris Bonnes of Huron, and Mary (Larry) Wentland of Nampa, Idaho; a stepdaughter of South Dakota; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Brooks of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Jean Layton (her friend Bill) of Rapid City; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Joyce was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Bonnes, in 1974; her second husband, Edward Johnson, in 2009; a son, Fredrick Bonnes; a daughter, Cheryl Bonnes; two brothers, Donald and Billie Brooks; a sister, Fay Landon; a sister in infancy; and her stepson, Jim Johnson.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. (CDT), with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and one hour before services Friday at the Welter Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) Friday, May 13, at the Welter Funeral Home with burial at the Maplewood Cemetery in Iroquois.
