MILES CITY, Mont. - Marilyn Furman-Smith, 80, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at her daughter and son-in-law's home in Miles City with her family by her side. Her daughter, Dawn, and her two sons as well as Debbie's two sons and six-month-old great-grandson were also able to spend time with her before her death. Dawn Shawda and John and Codi Erickson stayed until her death.
Marilyn was born July 3, 1930, in Rapid City, S.D., to William Fauss Bodenner and Inga Sanner. She grew up in Fairburn, S.D., and attended school through the 10th grade in Fairburn. She then commuted by train to Rapid City, where she graduated from high school. She worked in the area until her marriage to John "Jack" Charles Furman on July 23, 1953, in Rapid City. The couple lived in Denver, and a couple of years later returned to Rapid City. "Jack" retired from his lifelong profession of truck driving in the late 1980s, and they moved to Green Valley, Ariz. After three years, they moved back to Rapid City. Marilyn remained in Rapid City after Jack's death in 1994. She married Leo Smith in 1996 and lived in Colorado for a brief time. She moved to Hardin in 1997 until she moved with her daughter, Debbie to Miles City in 2006.
She loved to shop, oil paint, read, as well as knitting and crocheting, and most of all, her family.
Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Debra (Ken) Cox of Miles City and Dawn (Kevin) Marie Shawda of Rapid City; four grandchildren, John and Grant Erickson and Justin and Scott Shawda; and seven great-grandchildren.
Marilyn was preceded in death by a sister.
Rite of Committal will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.
The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care, and kindness she and her family received through Hospice. And a special thank you to Stevenson's and Sons for making this difficult period in our lives easier to handle with their kindness and compassion.
