Patrick Cuny Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2011.
BUFFALO GAP - Patrick N. "Pat" Cuny, 87, Buffalo Gap, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Sturgis.

Pat was born Nov. 28, 1923 to Charles and Alvina (Garcia) Cuny Sr. at Cuny Table. On April 1, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in the European Theatre, where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant with the 262 D Infantry Regiment, 66th Division. He was a leader of a rifle squad composed of 12 enlisted men engaged in combat operations. Uncle Pat received the Good Conduct Medal, EAMET Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and the Purple Heart Medal from wounds he received in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre on Feb. 18, 1945. He was honorably discharged from military service on April 6, 1946.

Pat was an all around cowboy all his life. After WWII ended, Pat worked in Wyoming in the coal mines for two years. Following this line of work, he came back home and worked on several different ranches over many years. Some of these ranches included large ranching operations such as the Western Cattle Co., D & H Witte, Wilson Ranch and the McGinley Ranch in Nebraska. Pat announced many rodeos in the area and loved to announce the 4-H rodeo shows. He was known by all the kids who later grew up to love him.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will deeply miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.

A visitation/vigil service will begin at 5 p.m., with 7 p.m. rosary services today at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14, at the Hermosa Fairgrounds Arena. Mr. Charles McGaa and Mr. Brent Cuny will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Cuny Table.

Deepest condolences. I knew Pat since I was 12 years old. He helped my dad, Rudy Burney, on Cuny Table and extended support during the time Rudy farmed up there. I was unaware of the funeral today or would have certainly been there.
