William Buchanan Obituary

GREENFIELD - Dr. William Roderick Buchanan Jr. died March 21 at his home in Greenfield. He was 90.
Bill was a practicing pediatrician in Greenfield from 1956 to 1994, and could often be heard whistling through the halls of the Franklin and Farren hospitals. He was passionate about children and books, and one of his greatest joys was connecting his patients with books that would make them life-long readers. In his retirement, he spent time reading aloud to students at local elementary schools.
Born on June 20, 1927, he was the son of William Roderick Buchanan and Amie Miriam (Goodnow) Buchanan of Athol. He attended Athol Schools and played the trumpet in the Athol High School Marching Band. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
In 1948, he graduated with honors from Yale University. There, he studied ornithology and anthropology, two things that remained passions throughout his life. Following his graduation from Yale, he attended Harvard Medical School, where he also graduated with honors in 1952.
He had two tours of duty in the Navy. He spent some of his time typing catalog cards at the Library of Congress, and liked to brag about attaining a typing speed of 28 words per minute! He served again as a lieutenant after he graduated from Harvard.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy Lee (Marshall) Buchanan formerly of North Wilmington and Gloucester, Mass. In addition, he is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Lawrence of Greenfield, Anne Buchanan Weiss of State College, Pa., and Jane Buchanan of Greenfield, and their partners; six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Numerous international students became part of his extended family over the years giving him beloved sons and daughters from South and Central America, Africa, and Asia. He also leaves many devoted former patients, of whom he had very fond memories. He always enjoyed running into them around town, and keeping up with their life journeys.
He loved traveling, birding, music, studying Spanish, running, and biking. He was an avid cook, and a collection of his favorite muffin recipes was a best-selling fundraiser for the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library.
A third-generation Unitarian Universalist he was a devoted member of All Souls Church, Unitarian Universalist, in Greenfield. He was also a long-time member of the board of the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, and a former chairman of the library's Board of Trustees. He could be found most Thursday mornings in the library basement sorting books for the Friends' many book sales.
At Bill's request, his body was donated to Harvard Medical School. A service celebrating his life will be held at All Souls Church, 399 Main Street, Greenfield on March 31 from 3 - 4. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to All Souls Church, 399 Main Street, Greenfield, MA 01301 or to the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, 402 Main Street, Greenfield, MA 01301.
His daughter Anne, who used to sit and draw with him during her visits to Greenfield, drew his obituary portrait.
The family appreciates the Kostanski Funeral Home assisting with arrangements. Sympathy message available at www.kostanskifuneralhome.com.

I'm sorry for your loss. I never met Dr. Buchanan, but I feel like I have because at least twice a week, some one of my patients at Valley Medical Group asks me if I'm his son (apparently, I'm tall and thin like him, though I don't whistle throughout my day). I can see he made a big impact on the people of Franklin County during his career as a pediatrician.

I have been forever thankful for the kind care Dr. Buchanan administered to our family during the years that we lived in Greenfield (1968-1978). I was a very young widow with three small children and he offered his care to our family "any time of the day or night" and I will come to help you". You can imagine the peace of mind knowing he was available during that time. I have never forgotten it and have carried his kindness and compassion with me for all these years. Yes, he was an extraordinary and exceptional human being. Count me among those of us who have felt blessed to have known him.

So sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Dr. Buchanan and his whistling when he would come into the room. I always remember a very kind and caring person during our appointments with him. I though of him often when my 2 children were younger and how nice it would have been to have Dr. Buchanan as their pediatrician.

My heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Nancy and daughters. Both my wife and I had the pleasure of working with him at times over the years and it is hard to put into words how special Dr. Buchanan was. He could have blown that trumpet very loud for all to hear for he certainly had the personal and professional attributes and credentials which made him special in a way few people would realize... but blowing his horn was not who he was, a quiet, kind, erudite and deeply compassionate person and physician - he gave so much to all of us and that was who he was. It was a great privilege and honor to have known him and to have been part of his world. There is a great void at The Franklin and some very large shoes to fill - the field of medicine has lost someone very special, the consummate prototype of a pediatrician and a wonderful role model.

Dr. Buchanan was such a kind and caring man. He was our children's pediatrician, and for that I am so thankful. When our son was two and diagnosed with cancer, Dr Buchanan was so understanding and always an encouragement to us.
Even after he retired, he always seemed genuinely concerned about how our children were doing. It was a pleasure to meet him unexpectedly in the grocery store. How I wish that I could tell him that our son, now in his 30's, is doing well and has his own son!

Dr. Buchanan holds a very special place in my heart. His heartfelt caring and calm presence is why we all survived my 2 year daughter's spinal meningitis. And I love the drawing--you can feel his essence. May we intertwine the sadness with the gratitude for having known Dr. Buchanan.
May his memory be a blessing

Dr Buchanan was my doctor in the 1960's and took care of me through a difficult illness for a youngster. He took the time to see me through my mid twenties. He was more than a doctor, he was a friend and I remember him fondly. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was good man.

Dr. Buchanan was the kindest doctor I ever had. The glow that surrounds his memory is
present with every recollection. I know our mother was so very fond of him.

What a lovely drawing.

In the hope that humor is healing, I will share one specific memory of our oddest "play date" (though I am sure we didn't call it that). It is of visiting the Buchanan's when the children had the chicken pox. We were brought over by our pediatrician mother so that we would catch them and "get them over with"! We were thrilled...and I don't think it worked!
Thinking of you all, Leigh

I don't think we would have been able to raise our 6 children without Dr. B's help. From 1964 through 1981! His books kept our oldest son out of mischief.

Dr. Buchanan was a wonderful doctor, not only did he help so many children but us mothers,as well. I had a 2 pound preemie in 1980 and without him I'm not sure I would have handled it as well as I did. He was always very kind and understanding, even if I called the office more than once a day which I often did. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to his family. I am so very sorry for your loss.
