Sophie "Sue" Rurak

1925 - 2016

DEERFIELD - Sophie ""Sue"" (Matus) Rurak, 90, of Greenfield Road died Monday 4/4/16 at the Buckley Health Care Center in Greenfield.
She was born in Conway on Saturday, August 29, 1925, the daughter of Samuel and Julia (Zubowicz) Matus. Sue was a graduate of Deerfield High School and continued her education at Bates College in Maine, receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Teaching.
On November 10, 1951 Sue married Carroll Rurak. They bought a house in Conway with six acres of land and spent many happy hours hiking and bicycling in the countryside and fishing for trout in nearby brooks. They then moved to Deerfield in 1971. For over 20 years, Sue enjoyed spending her winters with her husband, Carroll, at their winter home in Winter Haven, FL.
She was a teacher in Montague City and in North Miami, FL before accepting a position at the Franklin Medical Center as admitting manager. She worked there for many years before her retirement.
Sue was a communicant of Holy Family Church in South Deerfield.
Among her survivors, Sue leaves many nieces and nephews.
Sue was predeceased by her step son, Michael Rurak of Newport, R.I., her husband, Carroll J. Rurak on January 25, 2015 and her siblings, Helen, Walter and Ed.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Thursday 4/7 at 10am at Holy Family Church, 31 Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls officiating. Burial will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in South Deerfield.
There will be no calling hours.
