Gilbert Edward Whiteside, 86, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at 5 a.m. at Four Seasons of Washington Court House.
Mr. Whiteside was born July 14, 1928, in Washington Court House, Ohio to Grant Thomas and Mary Clara Mullen Whiteside. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School but lived most of his life in Washington Court House.
He was an inventory controller at Armco for 28 years then worked the Fayette County Commission on Aging's Meals on Wheels program for 19 years. He was a well-known grower and hybridizer of day lilies.
Mr. Whiteside was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the Columbus Chapter of the American Day Lily Society. He served as a medic in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and formerly was a member of Paul H. Hughey Post #25 of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Grant Whiteside and a brother-in-law, Dr. John Louis.
Mr. Whiteside is survived by his wife, the former Karen Jean Boardman whom he married November 16, 1988; three children, Wendy Eddlemon and her husband, Donny, of Good Hope, Daniel Curl of Sabina and his fiancé, Peggy Chaney, David G. Curl and his wife, Kristina, of Washington Court House; eight grandchildren, Paige Eddlemon, Trent (Paula) Curl, Brandan (Courtney) Curl, Kayla Curl, Joshua (Jessica) Curl, Lynosie (Shawn) Harris, Danielle Curl and Samuel (Victoria) Curl; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Peggy) Louis of Washington Court House and a nephew, Dr. David (Luan) Louis of Beavercreek.
In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Whiteside's body was donated to The Ohio State University for medical research.
A memorial service will be held Monday, December 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in Washington Court House with Pastor David Ellenberger officiating. A time of food and fellowship will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall at the church. Burial will be at a later date in Washington Cemetery
