Verna Higgins Obituary

1921 - 2011
Verna Lucille Higgins, 89, of Redding, died Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Willow Springs Alzheimer's Care Center from complications of a stroke. Verna was born in Hudson, Wisconsin, December 6, 1921 to Alma and Walter Cronk. She met and married the love of her life, her husband Harold "Hal" F. Higgins, Jr., while they were both serving overseas during World War II. Verna served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in The United States, North Africa, and Italy during World War II, and was very proud of that service. She and her family moved to Redding in 1961 from The San Fernando Valley, CA. Verna worked for the City of Redding for 19 years and retired as the first female Purchasing Officer for the City in 1980. She was a member of The Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Retired Public Employees' Association of California, and Women in Military Service for America.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Hal" F. Higgins, Jr., her sister Florence Johannsen, her brother Alfred Cronk, and her parents Alma and Walter Cronk. She is survived by her only child, daughter Lynn Thompson (Buzz) of Manton, CA, her granddaughter Michelle Klein (Andy) of Akron, OH, her great-granddaughter Brittany Landon of Mt. Shasta, CA, her "baby sister" Barbara "Bardy" Johnson, of St. Joseph, MI, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be at McDonald's Chapel on Monday evening, June 20th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with Rosary being said at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be said at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Redding on Tuesday, June 21st, at 10 a.m., by Father George. Graveside services with Military Honors will be at Redding Memorial Park following the church services. The family asks friends and family to celebrate her wonderful life with them at the Hospitality Room at McDonald's Chapel following the graveside services.
In lieu of flowers, Verna and her family ask that donations be made to St. Joseph's Educational Fund, Mercy Hospice, or Nor-Cal Chapter 111 Women's Army Corps Veterans' Association.
Verna's family would like to thank the amazing staff of Willow Springs Alzheimer's' Care Center in Redding for their loving care of Verna over the past two years.

I am so sorry for your loss. Now she is no longer suffering and is with "Uncle Higgie" again. I remember the good times when your Mom & Dad came to visit us in MN. Sonna and Jerry Schauer are my parents. The pictures and story were awesome. Wow! I would love to know more about her life in the military.
Your family is in my prayers,
Love, Joni (Schauer) LaFleur

What a beautiful tribute to your Mother. It is sad, happy and comforting all at the same time to go through pictures. Wish I could be there to help celebrate her life.

Lynn,

David and I are saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. It is so difficult to loose a parent, although we do know she is in a better place. It's been a while since I have seen her but I remember her putting up with us as teenagers making peanut butter and banana sandwiches in your kitchen and our loud music coming from your bedroom. Love and prayers to you and your family!

We are very sorry to hear the loss of Verna. It has been many years since I have seen her but, the memories are all good. I am the daughter of Sonna and Jerry Schauer. We have been getting updates from Bardy along the way. May you have peace knowing she is in good hands and knowing she is with "higgy" once again.

Love,
Connie (Schauer) Effinger
