I'll miss the guy...
When I first met him in the early 1980's, I knew George was a very generous person. He barely knew me, but he had noticed my love of vintage soda and beer collectables, and decided to give me a 1940's Royal Crown soda cooler that he had acquired somewhere along his travels. It took me about 20 years, but I finally gave it the restoration it deserved.
After him and my mom got married, if someone in the neighborhood needed something fixed, needed a truck to move something or weren't able to mow their lawn, he would be right there offering his help.
Growing up in San Francisco, he was naturally a 49er fan to the core. If you have ever wondered what a grown man looks like wearing head to toe RED 49er pajamas with a cheese head (the Niners were playing the Packers), strapped to his rear end, I have a picture you might want to see.
George was very passionate about his occupation as a professional driver. He was a dedicated Greyhound bus driver for many years, and even after he left the company, he had it in his blood. He would always look forward to catching up with his former co-workers and sharing old war stories at the annual Greyhound picnic in Lake Redding Park.
He loved to patronize and support numerous local fraternal lodges such as the Anderson Loyal Order of Moose #509 , and was also active in the VFW Flag program in Anderson, CA.
George never grew out of his boyish love of gadgets. If it caught his eye, watch out! He ended up flying Ultralights in the 1980's, and always offered friends and family rides in the Hovercraft that he acquired later on.
Another pastime he enjoyed was fishing. After he conquered all the local streams and lakes , he took up the hobby of solitaire on the computer. I am not sure if he ever won that battle !
George also carried on a time honored tradition that seems to have fallen by the wayside in this age of computers ...the joke! In this age of so much communication being emailed, he still found the time to tell the latest one in person.
And of course, George loved to have a good time. Once he was off the clock at work, he loved to celebrate life with a drink , surrounded by his friends or family.
See you for a cocktail in Heaven....
Love,
Fred & Deanna Metcalfe
