George Newcom Obituary

George Emerson Newcom

Beloved husband and father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
A kind and loving, gentle soul, always his helping hand to lend.
So much more to live, so much more to tend, so much more to give, way too soon to end.

George Emerson Newcom was born September 5, 1946 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

George's family moved from Omaha, Nebraska to Berkeley, California in 1957 when his father accepted a teaching position in the Math Department at Berkeley High School.

George loved music and played piano, trumpet, and drums. Music was always a part of his family's life as his father played accordion in his own swing band in the 1930's, and his older brother played saxophone when he was in high school. George was in the Berkeley High School marching band during the time when the band performed in two Rose Bowl parades in Pasadena and at the World's Fair in Seattle, Washington.

George graduated from Berkeley High School in 1964, and was a music major at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park and Merritt College in Oakland. In the late 1960's George played drums with "The Loading Zone," a popular Bay Area Rhythm and Blues Soul band that opened for headliners at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, Avalon Ballroom, and Winterland, as well as recorded an album with RCA Victor, and went on one national tour.

George met his future wife, Anne Buffum, when they were in high school. Although they were not high school "sweethearts," they knew each other and actually double-dated once.
After high school they coincidentally attended the same college and were at one time both engaged to be married to other people; however, both engagements broke up, and in summer of 1967 after their paths kept crossing in the most unexpected places, they started walking down the same path together and were married on August 1, 1968.

George chose a broadcasting career over professional drumming, although he continued to play in various bands over the years, the most recent being the band "Bad Daddy," most of whose band members had also played together in a rock band in the late 1960's. George and Anne moved to Redding from Berkeley in December 1969 after he accepted an announcer's job at Radio Station KVCV and went on the air for the first time on New Year's Eve, 1969.

During his broadcasting career, George had been News Director, Program Director, and morning talk show host for Radio Station KQMS; Redding's news reporter for KHSL TV; and Program Director and talk show host for Radio Station KNR. In addition, George hosted a production, "Challenge of the Minds" by the local PBS TV Station, and was the Interim Director for Community Access TV.

George and Anne have a daughter, Heather, who has recently moved back to Redding after living the past year in Chico and a decade in San Diego where she owned a fitness center for the disabled. During the years since George retired from broadcasting, he has been managing and maintaining rental properties which he and his wife Anne co-own with George's parents.

George and Anne have been long-time members of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Redding, and they sang together in their church choir.

George passed away July 1, 2010 at the age of 63 of a dissecting aortic aneurism.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Grethel Newcom, and is survived by his wife Anne, his daughter Heather, his father Samuel G. Newcom, his brother Samuel R. Newcom, his sister Joy Newcom-Wade, four nephews, three nieces, two great nephews, and six great nieces.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 2 P.M. at
Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church on Alta Mesa Drive in Redding.

Brother George - The family misses you but know that you are in a good place. You lived life to the fullest from Griswold, IA to Omaha, NE, to Berkeley, CA, to Redding, CA to Deloit, IA, and back to Redding. You considered the ministrey in the Methodist Church but said you never quite got the calling. You loved music and recorded with RCA (Loading Zone) and Vintage (Bad Daddy). You had a great career in radio - first as a music D.J. and then bringing some thoughtfullness to talk radio. I know many in Redding learned important concepts during that 6 A broadcast. As a side-light you developed real estate putting 6 duplexes into operation and keeping a growing family in Redding functional and well cared for. I will be with you in not too many years. Keep that beat going. I think I can add a little Alto sax when I get there.

It's very sad to learn of George Newcom's death. I did not know him very well and did not have the chance to work with him, but each encounter I had with him was positive. I can see what others say about his personality and how he treated everyone well. We were competitors and we share the same first name. On a few occasions when I would place a call on a news story and identfy myself, people actually thought it was George Newcom calling. I would sometimes feel that I was delivering disappointing news, when I told them that was not the case. George was always complimentary of me when we spoke and I always thought he was a nice guy. I had the priviledge of holding the title of News Director for KQMS myself from 1998 to 2004, carrying on a tradition that George Newcom was instrumental in building.

My heart goes out to his wife, daughter and entire family. You all have my condolences.

I want to thank all of you for your kind and warm comments about George. He was indeed a loving and gentle soul, and 42 years of marriage wasn't near long enough with him--"Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be" will not be for me, and my heart is broken--but I am so thankful for the time I did have with George, and I thank all of you for loving him too.

The Nuke was one of my favorite people on the planet. George had a infectious spirit that touched and inspired so many around him.

I can't start to count the memories over the years but I can tell you what, it was all good stuff.

I am going to miss you brother.

I had the pleasure of hiring George twice at KQMS . . once when he moved over from another station and when he returned from the Midwest. I never saw George smoke or drink while at work. He was a pro in the best sense. George will be missed by family and friends. He was a joy as an employee.

Ann and family, Nancy and I send you our deepest sympathy to you. George was a good friend of mine for several years at Harry Barker's KQMS.

We were all like family and George was one of the best. He was always smooth in delivery and cool in demeaner.

George was a good friend of fellow broadcaster Jim Anderson who lived across from KQMS on Alta Mesa Drive.

Many times after work I would watch and listen to Newcom and Anderson jam. What a talented pair they were.

Both are jamming with Gabe at the Golden Gate!

We'll miss you George, you are a good friend.

Tho our moments shared together in mutual support of music...I always knew there was more to George than had been shared with me by his close friends. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends who surely feel a profound loss of this gentle soul. I will miss him, too!

Your loss is felt by a community that received the benefit of George's compassion and efforts. His patriotism was realized through his efforts to support area veterans programs. We will remember George. Those who are not forgotten are not really gone from us. My deepest sympathy to the Newcom family.

George, I know you've moved on to that great drumset in the sky, but your spirit will always be with me. I make you this promise: I will complete Bad Daddy's first album that include your fabulous drum tracks and I will dedicate it to you. And when my time comes we'll get together up there in Heaven; we'll jam, we'll gig, and we'll play the most beautiful music ever. My deepest sympathy goes out to your wife and daughter. Mark

Missing you alot. We used to argue about several things on the air, but it was all good. We became friends when you found out I was a radio man myself. Miss and love you...
