Nina Spurling Obituary

Nina Mae Spurling

March 8, 1927 ~ December 29, 2010

Born March 8, 1927 in Berryman, Missouri the fifth of eight children of William and Sadie Nethington entered into rest December 29, 2010. They moved to Potosi, Missouri when she was 4, where her parents ran a restaurant and had many fond memories along with stories about her childhood. The family moved to Bell Gardens, CA in 1941. She sometimes described that move as the "Beverly Hills Hillbillies" move. She attended high school there. In 1947 she met and married Herbert Spurling. They lived and worked in Bell Gardens, Norwalk, Garden Grove, Anaheim to name a few, moving to Shingletown, CA in 1967. She worked at various jobs throughout her life, McClellan AFB during the war, Hunts, Nabisco, Marco-Oak in Anaheim and Black Butte School in Shingletown as Special Ed Aide, retiring in the 1970's.

Locally she lived in Shingletown, Happy Valley, Anderson, then Redding in 1992 after Herb's death in 1991. She loved fishing and camping, arts and crafts of all kinds. An avid Artist, she won ribbons at the Shasta District Fair for her paintings. Nina was very independent and lived life to the fullest until failing health took its toll this last year. She was an amazing woman and did not always receive credit for her great strength and talents. It is so hard to compress someone's life into this one article but those who knew her will miss her dearly.

She is survived by daughters Tina Ricketts of Redding, CA Anna Clements of Mountain Gate, CA, stepson Arvin Spurling-Finley of Idaho, step daughters Glenda Winget of Utah, Cheryl Munson of Maine, brothers Perry Nethington of Chico, CA, Jerry Nethington of Lancaster, CA, sister Fern Weintraut of Temecula, CA, grandsons Ronald Hutchens of Cottonwood, CA, James Clements of Mountain Gate, CA, granddaughters Gina Ricketts of Redding, CA, Jennifer Hutchens-Doyal of Portland, OR and their families, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years Herbert Earl Spurling, parents William Parker and Sadie Lee Nethington, brothers Lynn and Donald Nethington, sisters Betty Young and Billie Applin, granddaughter Christine Mathis-Dinkins and a number of in-laws and other family members and friends.

We LOVE you. You will be remembered.

"He put His arms around you and lifted you to Him.
Your pains now gone. He knew you needed rest."

I work for the Shasta Senior Nutrition Programs. I was Nina's Meals on Wheels driver. I served her lunch every weekday for five years. I had so many great conversations with her over the years that I came to rely on her advice. I will miss her so much as she was one of my favorite people ever. The strength she showed this last year was amazing. I will miss watching the court drama shows with her and laughing at how some of the people acted. I will miss seeing her family who I feel I have gotten close to also. Mostly I will miss her smile when I brought her a simple flower or whatever little trinket we were handing out that day. I am so glad I got to see her before she passed. I will always remember her waking up and saying " hi Robin, how nice of you to visit me". I share this moment with her grand daughter Gina. In this job we see a lot of people pass and we don't get to say good bye. I will treasure every moment I had with her forever. Good Bye Nina see you on the other side.

I remember Mrs. Spurling, she was my teacher at Black Butte School in Shingletown, she was an amazing teacher and I have thought of her often, so sorry to hear about your family loss. Kelly Myers
