BABBIN, REV. ELWOOD L. Rev. Elwood L. Babbin, 87, of Waterford, CT died peacefully on Tuesday December 30 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. He was born November 4, 1927 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of the late Walter Babbin and Mary Elizabeth Fowler Babbin. He was predeceased by his brother Walter and sister Lila. “Woody”, as he was known to his many friends, was called to the Christian ministry in his late teens. He graduated from the Providence Bible Institute (later Barrington College), from Boston University with a Master’s degree, majoring in History and Religious Studies. He also attended the Southern Baptist Seminary, the Hartford Seminary Foundation. Babbin traveled extensively in Europe and the Holy Lands. Rev. Babbin’s early ministry was in several Baptist churches, beginning in Norwich, CT. Other churches were in Rhode Island and Connecticut. In all, he spent over thirty years in the pastorate. His love of the New Testament and the history of the Christian church led to a ten year career of teaching at Barrington College (now Gordon College) in Rhode Island. Rev. Babbin is survived by his wife Kirsten Wallgren Babbin, his children, Matthew Babbin, of Avon, Donna Babbin, of New Hartford, Kelley Babbin, of Winsted, David and Margarita Babbin, of Farmington, Deborah and Michael Damen, of Chicago and stepchildren, Tad and Jill Kennedy of Groton and Sarah and Hank Pinkowski of Spencer, MA. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Rev. Babbin was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Niantic. Woody served as an assistant chaplain at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital and as a Hospice Chaplain. He also organized and led a number of study groups both among fellow clergy and at St. John’s Church. He was a lifelong sports fan of all the Boston sports teams, and especially his beloved Red Sox. He also spent his latter years following national and world politics and the growth and development of his family. A Memorial Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated on Saturday, January 3, at 11:00am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 400 Main Street in Niantic. There are no calling hours. Dear Kristen, you and the family are in my prayers. Woody was always an encouraging presence in the early years of my ministry. He was one of the good guys. May he rest in peace in the Father's arms. So sorry I can;t be with you for the funeral mass. I know it will be a fine tribute.

My heartfelt condolences to Kirsten and all of Woody's extended family and friends. I was a classmate of Woody's at Providence Bible Institute in the 40's, then, happily re-connected with him and Kirsten in the last 10 years. He was socially fun and intellectually stimulating. I'll miss being able to e-mail or see him.

Back in Sept.1961, Pastor Babbin officiated at my wedding. Over about eight years he was my pastor, my mentor and friend. I, along with my siblings, will always be grateful for Elwood's gentle, often humorous spirit. But the most outstanding thought is that he was truly a man of God, who cared for his church, encouraged greatly his congregation, and went to great lengths to show he cared. I was the first of five kids all to go to college, primarily because of the huge encouragement from him. He has got to be so happy in Heaven right now. I offer condolences to you, his family.... but I want you to know, he was a blessing to so many, and he's in a wonderful place right now.

Pastor Babbin, sat with me and helped me commit my life to Christ as a 12 year old boy. He baptized me, mentored me, encouraged my sisters and me to go to Christian college. While at Barrington, he taught a class in Christology - which I enjoyed. He later officiated at the funeral of my father. Too few people have had the privilege of knowing him. God bless you - his family - as you grieve and honor Christ's blessings in his life. His life was well lived! Richard Main

Pastor Babbin and the people of Calvary Baptist Church made a huge difference in the lives of the members of our family. He drove 30 miles one way to pick us up and take us to church another 20 miles. He drove that trip in reverse at the end of services. He did it all over again in the evening and again on Wednesday evening. He was a huge blessing.

I worked with Woody at Leighton Realty in Gales Ferry many years ago! He perform our marriage on Jan 6th 1979. I will never forget the advice he gave us at our pre marriage counseling. "Don't get upset if she burns the toast" He was a wonderful kind and caring Man. RIP Woody

I will remember Woody very fondly for the time we worked together at our Hospice agency. I immediately liked his folksy, down to earth manner but also engaged in many pointed discussions about our different views on religion and spirituality. He was a gentle, learned man and will be very missed. My sympathy to all who love and will miss him.
