Carl Bothman Obituary

Carl Jerome
Bothman

1935 - 2017

Carl Jerome Bothman, also known around Eugene as "Mr. Dairy Queen," passed away peacefully on January 3, 2017.

Carl was born October 9, 1935, in Portland, Oregon, the fourth of Fred and Kathryn Bothman's seven children. Carl grew up in Portland and Salem. While attending Salem High School, he worked at Schreiner's Iris Gardens, his first job. He graduated in 1953. He studied Bible and business at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Carl worked at a vocational school, camp, and conference center on Thetis Island, BC, Canada where he met his beloved wife, Ann. They say true love began when Ann performed as Cinderella and Carl was an ugly stepsister, not Prince Charming. Children Michael, Carla, and Roderick, were born while they lived on Thetis Island. Son Christopher was born in Winfield, Illinois, where Carl worked for Sveden House Smorgasbord.

The Bothmans moved back to the Eugene/Springfield area in 1972 to be close to family. Carl worked as an operations manager for King's Table Buffet before he purchased the Coburg Road Dairy Queen in 1979. Carl had a dynamic role in building not only the legend of the Coburg Road Dairy Queen but the DQ brand in the Northwest. When he wasn't at Dairy Queen, Carl could be found spending time with his family and working in the yard. Carl enjoyed serving as a leader and mentor at church wherever he lived. He will be remembered and loved by his wife of fifty-six years, four children, their spouses, and eleven grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, January 15, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Eugene, 3550 Fox Meadow Rd. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Camp Harlow scholarship fund, 3850 County Farm Rd., Eugene, OR 97408.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff of Memory Care at Waterford Grand and Hospice of Sacred Heart for your care and compassion.

Arrangements are in care of Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. Visit majorfamilyfuneralhome.com to sign the online guest book.

Carl was always in a good mood with a positive outlook on everything. He was easy to talk to as we sat by the fireplace together in the middle of the night. Carl quickly became my favorite customer at the Waterford Grand retirement facility and shortly after became my friend. I miss him dearly and will always remember the nice times we spent together. "extra chocolate, extra peanuts".

Judy and I have so many pleasant memories of a dear Christian and friend. What a wonderful husband, father, and friend Carl was. Thank you, Lord, for Carl.

To your family from ours. Very happy memories from Thetis Island building a brick wall side by side - to all our kids now grown with kids of their own. Shari and Clarks first house next door to yours and of course the DQ! Hugs to all of you.
