Gladys Hartley Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jul. 31, 2009.

HARTLEY Gladys M. (nee Crow) January 17, 1921 - July 27, 2009 Dear wife of the late Victor Hartley (1910-1984), loving mother of Sandra and Ted Hartley, and treasured grandmother of Catherine O'Brien and Kristina O'Brien, Gladys will be sadly missed but dearly remembered. Born in Winnipeg, and a resident of North Vancouver since 1953, Gladys is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Beverley and Ron Itani, Sandy and Norm Jones, Allan Hartley, Bill Wackman, and Anita Raby, as well as sister-in-law, Jean Hartley. A member of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company by age 16, Gladys was exquisitely trained in the performing arts. Meeting Vic at the Winnipeg YMCA, they soon were doing beautiful lifts and adagio work that was adapted successfully to pair roller and ice skating at the Fort William Skating Club in the 1940's and the Vancouver Skating Club in the 1950's. Gladys trained and costumed over 500 children annually as Production Director of the Vancouver Skating Club. From 1953 into the 1980's, her dance classes in North Vancouver prepared hundreds more children in ballet, tap and acrobatics. From 1963 into the 1980's, Gladys was known as "Mrs. Flicka" as Head Coach of Flicka Gymnastics Club and coach of many Olympians and international gymnasts. For her thousands of volunteer hours sharing her judging, performance and artistry skills to the province of B.C., Gladys was honoured in Coaching in 2003 by the B.C. Sports Wall of Fame. Having touched and enhanced so many lives over so many years, Gladys is a major loss to the community of North Vancouver. The Hartley family are indebted to her personal physician, Dr. Susan Chow, whose compassionate care in Lions Gate Hospital over many years stemmed from fond bonds formed with Gladys in Flicka Gym Club. A special note of thanks is extended to Evergreen Transitional Care Unit in recent months, many of whom, so expertly comforted Gladys in her final days. Private graveside service. My prayers are with you as you sadly say goodbye to your Mom... I am honoured to have known her, and will always keep fond memories of Mrs Hartley close to my own heart! If only we could all walk as 'gracefully' through life as she did! She will be missed! Darlene Geary (Thitchener)

Ken and I were very sad to think that Gladys is no longer with us - our sympathy is sent to you all. We have many memories over the years we knew her. It was through our youngest daughter Valerie (who is now in Australia) who was in her dance class first, and then through Glady's recommendation, joined Flicka. Later on she coached the Kindergym.

Sandy & Ted - My own mum just told me of your mum's passing & I am so sorry to receive this news. My heart goes out to you now.

I also have so many amazing memories surface from my years competing with Flicka. As a circus coach now, I try be kind to the kids I teach like she was to me... and, like her, to challenge them to do their very best.

Looking back on my years in gymnastics, I realize what an honour it was to have her as my primary coach.

Dear Sandy
Our sincere sympathies go out to you, Catherine,Kristina and Ted.
I have so many great memories of Gladys ... dancing & skating in Fort William in the 50's, staying with my parents in your old house in North Vancouver first in '54 and again in '68, my daughters dance lessons in the 70's, and being there to witness her joy with the 2003 Induction to the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
I'll cherish those decades of memories. She will surely be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Dear Ted,
We are thinking of you during this difficult time.
I remember all of the snowball and water fights your mom put up with when we were kids!
I will always have warm memories of her and especially summer times in the garden.
Love, Your next door neighbour of many years but now living in Australia,
Taryn and family.

So sorry to hear of your loss. My family were neighbours with Vic and Gladys when they lived in Fort William so our friendship goes back many years
In Vancouver my girls took gym and dance classes with Gladys and we have kept in touch through the years. I have many fond memories of her and will miss her.
