Lee Harrison Obituary

Lee Harrison

Winters , TX

Donal Lee Harrison, 88, of Winters Texas, passed away Thursday. Visitation will be 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Monday, April 24, 2017 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. His funeral service will be 1:00PM, Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at First Baptist Church, 104 W Truett St, Winters, Texas. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene.

Known to his many friends and family as Lee, he was widely recognized in his community as an honest and caring businessman, a dedicated Christian and a friend to many. Lee was born in Breckenridge on April, 26, 1928 to John Ernest Harrison and Emma Gusta Harris Harrison. Lee graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1946. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate and served at the Naval Air Station, Seattle from 1946 - 1948. Lee was always very proud of his military service.

Lee met and married Lula Mae 'Tooter' Hampton on June 25, 1950 in Abilene. They married on the day the Korean War started. They moved to Winters in 1951 where Lee became the manager of the Dunigan Tool and Supply. Their vibrant and strong marriage produced two children, Mark Hampton Harrison and Keva Lee Harrison. In 1970, because of his reputation in the community, Winters State Bank asked Lee to become a Loan Officer. He quickly moved up to Sr. VP and worked there until his retirement in 1990. Lee lost his precious Tooter in early 1996 after a battle with cancer. In January, 1997, Lee married Judith Dietz Chapman. They recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.

Lee was very active in the community and his church. He served as a Winters city councilman, with the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Lions Club for over 60 years. In his retirement, he became very involved in Texas Baptist Men's Builders and Campers on Missions. With both organizations, he and Tooter, and later with Judy, traveled to many points of the country building churches and church camps. Before giving up this beloved missions activity, he often traveled and worked up to 26 weeks per year. It was something he truly loved to do to serve the Lord.

Lee was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Lula Mae 'Tooter' Hampton Harrison, his parents, John Ernest and Emma Gusta Harrison of Breckenridge. Five of his six siblings including Millie Leona Griffith Williams of Breckenridge, Henry Ernest Harrison of Breckenridge, Harley Clifton Harrison of Ft. Worth, James Howard Harrison of Breckenridge and Gladys Florine Johnson of Warner Robbins, GA.

He is survived by his sister, Virgie Mae Sellars (Gene) of San Angelo. His children, Mark Hampton Harrison (Linda Holt) of Dallas and Dr. Keva Green of Henrietta. Grandchildren including Gray Hampton Harrison (Madeleine Huffman) of Plano, LeeRand Michelle Green of Houston, Kevin Michael Green (Katherine Elizabeth "Liz" Franklin) of Arlington. Five great grandchildren including Keegan Holt Harrison and Audrey Moyer Harrison of Plano and London Asher Green, Brooklyn Rain Green and Boston River Green of Arlington. Also, numerous nieces and nephews. In spirit, he also survived by Judy's family including Jimmy "Jim" Ray and Francis Renae Shiller Chapman and their children Coy Mitchell, Garrett Ray and Katie Renae Chapman and three great grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Children's Organ Transplant Organization (Indianapolis, IN), the First Baptist Church of Winters, the First United Methodist Church of Henrietta or the church or charity of your choice.

Enjoyed working with Lee on many Texas Baptist Men Camp jobs. I know Lee worked on more than 100 different jobs and loved the work. I missed Lee when he no longer could work with us.

We first met Lee and Judy when we joined Texas Baptist Men in 2001 and were immediately drawn to them. Lee worked so hard and showed so much devotion to the cause of helping others. He taught me many things including the peace and acceptance of any task or challenge. I so completely enjoyed working with Lee and the times we shared at each project. So sorry we will miss the Memorial service today.

Lee and Tooter Harrison were our neighbors when we moved to Winters, TX, in 1958, with Humble Oil and Refining. We had lived several places before our move to Winters and had always heard of the friendly people in west Texas. The people in Winters proved that to us during the two years we were there, and the Harrisons were part of the reason. We first met Keva, who came to see us one Sunday afternoon, unannounced and we fell in love with the family from that visit. Our son was also a Mark and he and Mark Harrison became fast friends. He is still a good friend and has kept in touch with our family all these years since we moved away from Winters. Lee and my late husband were the best of buddies and we had so much fun with them. One of my best memories is of them is of the day we took the Harrison's ski boat to the Winters Lake and Lee and Tooter taught my husband how to ski. He fell so many times trying to get up that we teased him about drinking all the water in the lake. He did learn, and later bought a ski boat for our boys to ski. Another memory was a trip they made to Dallas and we all went to Six Flags for the day. We had a great time and I have pictures of all of us on that day. They were both wonderful people and we missed seeing them these last years, but heard about Lee's many trips with the Baptist Men. A huge loss for his family and many friends.
