Howard Pardue Obituary

Howard Edwards
Pardue
Breckenridge

Howard Edwards Pardue, 77, died on April 4, 2012, doing what he loved most, and at which he was among the world's most accomplished: flying the F8F Bearcat. Howard leaves behind his loving wife Carolyn, sister Emily Tolle, brother Bill Pardue, five children, twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a legion of friends and admirers from across the country and around the world.
Howard was born February 3, 1935 in Breckenridge, Texas, the son of William and Virginia Pardue. After what might be described as an "exciting" childhood, Howard graduated in 1952 from Breckenridge High School and enrolled in Texas Tech University. After a year at Tech he joined the United States Marine Corps where he was selected for flight training. Upon receiving his wings at Pensacola Naval Air Station, he became a fighter pilot, flew most of the Marines' high performance aircraft of that time including the FJ4, F9F, F8U, F4D, and A4, and eventually became an instructor. The Marines were an important part of Howard's life and he served twelve years on active and reserve duty, retiring as a major.
Howard met his wife Carolyn Cunill in 1984. After an extended courtship they married and for 28 years were a perfect partnership: Howard's quiet confidence and gruff demeanor; Carolyn's bright smile and outgoing nature. A pilot in her own right, Carolyn shared Howard's passion for flying and his affection for the people in the aviation community. Together they traveled the world, sometimes to participate in airshows, sometimes just for the pleasure of traveling and experiencing new places. They built their dream house in Houston and Howard divided time between his home with Carolyn in Houston and his business interests in Breckenridge.
Howard was widely recognized as one of the best warbird pilots around. He could, and did, fly almost every conceivable aircraft of that type. His flying experiences were many and varied. He was in great demand in airshows around the world because of the beautiful, precise routines he flew in his F4F Wildcat and the F8F Bearcat. He was selected by the Navy to participate in Legacy Flights in which front line Navy fighters are paired in flight with historic aircraft. He raced in the Reno National Air Races for 29 years, winning medals in the Unlimited Category numerous times. He was a crowd favorite at Reno where the race announcer would introduce his plane with the words: "Everyone loves Howard Pardue." He had numerous aviation adventures including flying a B-25 from the United States to Tahiti and bringing a number of World War II aircraft from Central and South America back to the United States.
His biggest impact on aviation, however, is the huge number of pilots whom Howard mentored or inspired. A man of few words, Howard provided an example of skill, dedication and determination that other pilots wanted to emulate. Whether they were active military, test pilots, astronauts, warbird pilots or private pilots, every pilot wanted to know Howard Pardue and to be counted among his friends.
Those friends all know that their world was better for having known Howard and that their world has been diminished by his loss.
Howard is survived by his wife Carolyn, his sister Emily Tolle, his brother Bill Pardue and wife Jean, his children Pamela Midkiff, Allison Jones, Leigh Murray, Paige Townson and husband Rickey Townson, and Jeffrey Pardue, and grandchildren Douglas Midkiff and his wife Stephanie, Christopher Midkiff, and Taylor Midkiff; Jordan McCann; Chad Townson and his wife, Lara; Kristen Townson; Drew and Hannah Murray; Cole, Lauren, and Wyatt Pardue; and great grandchildren Sayler and Maylea Townson. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Virginia Pardue and by his daughter Kimberly Brooke.
Howard loved animals. His friends remember his devotion to his Bull Terrier, Captain, and his Jack Russells: Zelda, Chloe and Mary.
There will be a memorial service for Howard at 2:00 p.m. Monday April 9, 2012 at First Christian Church, 101 E. Williams St., in Breckenridge, Texas, with a reception immediately following at the Breckenridge Aviation Museum, Stephens County Airport. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a remembrance of Howard to Wounded Warriors Project, Breckenridge Meals on Wheels, Dr. Goodall's House, a safe house for children, Citizens for Animal Protection or a charity of your choice.

Howard and I were in Pre-flight Class 6-55 at Pensacola in 1055. He went Marine and I went Navy. After Basic Flight Training, I didn't see him again until 2008 when we had a Class Reunion in Pensacola. I had kept up with some of his flying exploits and was saddened when I heard of his death.

With the Duxford Flying Legends airshow this weekend I shall miss seeing Howard in one of Stephen Gray's fighters. His visits always gave us some memorable moments here in the UK.
Condolences to his family and many friends.

Our heartfelt condolences to Carolyn, and to Howard's family. We never got to meet his daughters, but were there @ the funeral of Kimberly Brooke. We have lost a legend in the warbird airshow world, a dedicated father and husband and a generous benefactor. I knew Howard as a man of few words, but incredible wisdom; he had a humorous side, and was quick to pull tricks on his friends, on the ground and in the air, always with a margin of safety. I flew Howard's wing across this continent in the 80's and early 90's, and respected his skill, his commitment to safe airdraft operation, and his unfailing fellowship with those he cared about. Howard leaves a Bearcat-sized hole in the hearts of his family, as well as his warbird friends. Watch over us, now, from your lofty vantage point, Howard, and Godspeed.

I had the destinct pleasure of working at the Breckenridge Warbird Museum from 1983 thru 1987, and during those years was awarded with several flights with Howard in his FG-1D Corsair (in the modified back seat), his T-6 and his TBF Avenger to numerous airshows and sometimes just for fun. He was so much more than just a pilot and business man - he was a friend to anyone who took the time to get to know him. Some of my most cherished memories were of the hot summer evenings sitting on the ramp in front of the hanger at Breckenridge talking about life in general with Howard. He was like a second father to me and had a big impact on my life. I will miss you Howard, hope to fly with you again some day!!!

I'm sorry I never had the honor of meeting Howard. I've enjoyed watching his airshow routine a number of times. From time to time at these airshow I would meet people who did know him and I never heard anything except glowing praise for this man. God Speed Howard. You will be missed.

I have flown with Best but only got to meet him at his Mueseum one Hot day in the 90's. I explained to him I lived at Hicks Airfield and knew the Great Neil Anderson and Ernie Lathem ,who flew Warbirds in the war. I was introduced to Neil Andersons son who worked at the Factory. We chat about my Grandfather who was at Russel Airfield in the old days when Pappe Spinks and Charlie Wilkerson where young men just out of the War. We had a B17 in those days bought for $2,500 . I took Taildragger Lessons from him and Edna White Both.
He gave me a Tour of thr Vintage Aircraft on site and showed me Hangers full of parts .I got a tour of the Little Airplane Rebuild Factor.
I will never Forget My Day With Howard.
He also sold me a weeks worth of his shirts from the Muesum.
Howard , God Bless you and your Family. Please Give Charlie Hillard a Big Thumbs Up ! We will miss all you Great Men in The Flying Machines !

Howard was an excellent pilot and a wonderful asset to the Warbird community. I remember seeing Howard on the flightline during the Harlingen airshows. I was also a guest one evening at a house party he had in Houston around 1994 or 1995. He nows soars with eagle wings. God Speed Howard, you will be missed.

School) in Howard's F4F Wildcat (My dad flew Wildcats and Hellcats). He was alwys so nice to me and spent the time to talk everytime I saw him.
He will be missed by all, Keith Swanson, M.D.

Howard and I flew and caroused around together at several airshows in the early eighties. I was a guest in his home in Breckenridge and flew the Memorial Day Airshow there for several years. I found Howard one of the most admirable, direct and helpful individuals I ever met. So many wonderful memories. On our way to an airshow in California I followed him down through the Grand Canyon in our fighters; then there was the time we were leaving Offut AFB and I was caught underneath the overcast without the correct radio frequencies, Howard raised departure control for me and got clearance to "on top" conditions.

I hope to see you again, ole buddy - you were a great human being!

April 10, 2012

My husband met Howard and Mrs. Pardue at the Reno Air Races with our friend Scott Rozzell in 2005. We watched him fly several times after that. We extend our sincere condolances to all the family. Sincerely, Richard and Ann Forward, Red Bluff, CA

As a warbirds enthusiast, I had the pleasure of watching Howard perform many times at airshows and Reno Air Races. On the few occassions that I had the opportunity to speak with him, he was cordial and willing to share his time and knowledge. He was a great ambassador for flying.

For all of us who were blessed to know Howard & call him friend for over 30 years, we were the lucky ones to share his life. There were so many sides to him & yes, your first impression may be of a "gruff ol' man" but if you really knew him, underneath was a man with a heart of gold who would give you the shirt off his back. The acts of kindness he did are too numerous to list here but the world has certainly lost one of the "Best of the Best". One thing I am sure of is that Jimmy & many others who left us way too early were waiting for him at Heaven's Gate & they are now racing together in God's air race - "Gentlemen you have a race" will never be the same! Blue skies my friend till we meet again - it was an honor to know you.
