John Estes Obituary

Dr. John L. Estes, Jr.
Abilene

Dr. John L. Estes, Jr. left his earthly home to join his Heavenly Father on Monday, October 25, 2010. Dr. John, as he was lovingly known, was born on August 23, 1923 to John L. Estes, Sr. and Lillian Coffman Estes in Elmdale, Texas. He graduated from Clyde High School in 1940 at the age of sixteen and moved to Abilene soon after graduation to enter Hardin-Simmons to prepare for the study of medicine. While a student at Hardin-Simmons, Dr. John got a job running the elevator at Hendrick Hospital and advanced to serving as an orderly.

He took several of his children and grandchildren with him on the medical mission trips, instilling in his family a desire to serve others.
Dr. John saw the need for a hospital at Namwianga Mission in Zambia, Africa and worked tirelessly to raise funds for a medical/dental facility. The Namwainga Rural Health Center became a reality and a wing of the hospital/dental facility is now named the Dr. John and June Estes Wing.
Dr. John served as an elder at University Church of Christ for many years and also served on the boards of Haitian Christian Foundation, Abilene Christian Schools, Disability Resources, Inc., Global Samaritan, American State Bank, Zambia Medical Mission and the Model A Ford Club. Dr. John was a kind and compassionate man who was loved by all. He always had time to help others and was a good man. He loved the Lord and set a great example for his family, friends and all those who knew and loved him.

I am almost positive that it was Dr John who came to see Dr Tindol while I was a patient in her office. He came over to inspect Dr Tindol's work (my mouth at the time :) .... He was such a pleasant man, he told me not to worry because he trained Dr Tindol well .... which he did .... and then proceeded to ask me a bunch of questions which I could not answer at the time .....dentist humor I guess. RIP Dr. John, and may God be with Dr Tindol and her family, I truly thank her for her wonderful work.

June and Family,
Just wanted to let you know we are thinking of you and remembering you in prayer.
I am Betty Morris. My parents were Frank and Louise Martin. I remember when Mother and Daddy celebrated their 50th anniversary Dr. John came with his special "old car" and took them to the church for the reception. What a friend!
What a wonderful legacy he has left behind for his family.
God bless each of you.

Love and Prayers,
Bruce & Betty Morris

I was an RA in Nelson dorm in 1986-88. Dr. Estes saw one young lady who had no insurance and an abscess. I had called around to see if any dentist would see her on a payment plan. He didn't even charge her! He was such a kind man.

Dear Estes family,

Please accept my most sincere sympathies. Dr. John was about the finest man I've ever met. He will be dearly missed by those who had the privilege of his company. Dr. John was the type of man that we all want to emulate. He was a success with his profession, but more importantly as a family man and as the Lord's servant.

Our loss is heaven's gain. I can just picture the Lord greeting Dr. John by stating, "well done, my good and faithful servant."

May our heavenly Father be with you all.

With love,

Jarod Bonine

John "Gunner" Estes was my dearest friend and greatest inspiration since our 1st meeting in 1952. He was without doubt the most honorable, kindest person God put on earth. I personally feel a deep void in my life, but the knowledge that John left a wonderful, permanent impression on everyone with whom he came in contact will always be my inspiration. May God bless his family and may they always treasure the memory of this great Christian man. Bonham Magness.

John was such a giant of a man in so many ways. He was so kind and always quick with a smile. I was privileged to have known him and see him in action on that mission trip to Guatemala so many years ago. We will miss him.
