David Frost Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 1, 2013.
LONDON (AP) — Veteran British journalist and broadcaster David Frost, who won fame around the world for his TV interviews with former President Richard Nixon, has died, his family told the BBC. He was 74.

Frost died of a suspected heart attack on Saturday night aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was due to give a speech, the family said. The cruise company Cunard said its vessel left the English port of Southampton on Saturday for a 10-day cruise in the Mediterranean.

Known for incisive interviews of leading public figures, Frost spent more than 50 years as a television star.

Prime Minister David Cameron was quick to send his condolences, praising Frost for being an "extraordinary man with charm, wit, talent, intelligence and warmth in equal measure."

"The Nixon interviews were among the great broadcast moments — but there were many other brilliant interviews," Cameron said. "He could be — and certainly was with me — both a friend and a fearsome interviewer."

The BBC said it received a statement from Frost's family saying it was devastated and asking "for privacy at this difficult time."

Frost's career on television news and entertainment spanned almost half a century. He interviewed many world leaders and celebrities, including Henry Kissinger and the Beatles.

But Frost is best remembered for his interviews with Nixon in 1977. Recorded after the Watergate scandal and the president's resignation, they achieved the largest audience for a TV news interview in history.

I was honored to meet Mr. Frost in 1980. I talked to him about his impressions of John Lennon and what it was like to interview Mr. Lennon. Mr. Frost impressed me as being very cultured as well as kind. He seemed very happy to chat and I'll always remember that conversation I had with him. The world has truly lost a good man who did something to redeem society and make us think as well as to laugh.

I was shocked when I saw that David Paradine Frost had passed away. I remember him like yesterday, of course, everyone will remember him with the Richard M. Nixon interviews, but in my younger days, I remember a brash, funny, and hilarious, but true guy who could sling out a joke as the best of anyone. He use to be on the British comedy show, "That Was The Week That Was". I can still remember the theme song to that show, and always hum it to myself sometimes after all of these decades. I was glad David was made a "Sir" a very prestigious title in the United Kingdom, given by her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, II! I will never forget this guy and no one else should either. You may not have always agreed what he said, but he was always for the little girl or guy who was pushed around by big government, but delivered his message with a salty tongue, a wink in his eye, and later a bit of humor with a zing to it! Just loved it! This guy is going to be terribly missed, hope he doesn't drive God and Jesus crazy!

Sir David Frost had one of the best regular talk shows on the air during the 1960s and produced the British satirical series "That Was the Week That Was" during that timeframe, which had a short-lived American counterpart, both of which foreshadowed the type of comedy for which SNL would later become renowned.

This man made no secret of his own feelings and passions, and was so much the better for it. He blatantly told off a racist and clearly adored Elizabeth Taylor when he interviewed her. Thanks, Sir David, for being the great man and journalist that you were.

My prayers, thoughts & condolences go out to the family, friends & collegues of the wonderful David Frost. He was a brilliant interviewer & journalist, always incisive, charming & witty. I watched many of his interviews with the famous & infamous and they were always entertaining & educational. It seems to me, that I first saw Mr. Frost on a show called "That Was The Week that Was," which really highlighted his wit & comedic flair. David Frost was a unique talent, a gifted reporter & writer, & will be missed. He was taken from us much too soon.
