BRICKER, Stephen Winston, April 9, 1947 to October 11, 2016. Steve died peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Richmond, Va., after a hard fought battle with the disease, MSA. He was born in Richmond, spent his youth in Arlington and moved back to Richmond. Steve graduated from the American School of Japan, Tokyo, Japan, and went on to attend Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Virginia School of Law. Throughout his life he fought passionately for the rights of others. While at UVA, he worked with the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia. He began a Post Conviction Assistance Program to represent indigent prison inmates, which was copied by students at other law schools. At the ACLU, Steve headed the new Children's Rights Project of Virginia. It enabled over 8, 000 children in foster care to be released from a legal limbo in order to be able to be placed for adoption. In the 1980s he co-led a voting rights project of the ACLU. The project was responsible for 18 voting rights cases filed in Virginia after the 1982 extension of the Voting Rights Act. He was a president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, as well as on the Board of Governors. Steve also served on the Board of Directors of the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society and the Commonwealth Community Trust. Additionally, he was a former member and Chairman of the City of Richmond Behavioral Health Authority. He was also a board member of the Area Drug Abuse Prevention and Training Services, Richmond Hotline, Inc., and the Neighborhood Legal Aid Society, Inc.
