Darence Stevers Kanode

Darence Stevers Kanode, 81, of Pembroke, departed this life Saturday morning August 6, 2011, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., after a short illness. Born in Pembroke on October 15, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Nathan (Poss) and Hila Birdia Merrix Stevers. Darence was a graduate of Pembroke High School, was a member of Pembroke First United Methodist Church, owned and operated Kanode's Beauty Salon in Pembroke for many years and was a hairdresser at Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert L. Kanode, Jr.; her son, Roger L. (Rocky) Kanode; her brother, Leslie Stevers; and her sister, Shelby Jean Campbell. She leaves to cherish her memory her son and daughters-in-law, Gregory S. and Regena Young Kanode of Salem and Beverly (Bebie) Reed Kanode of Pembroke; her grandson and his wife, Christopher Todd and Kimberly Lewis Kanode of Blacksburg; her great-grandson Jonathan Tyberius Kanode of Blacksburg; and her brother and sister-in-law, Lindsey and Mary Stevers of Hoges Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Pembroke First United Methodist Church with Eddie Kendall and Bob Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow Street, Pembroke, on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Pembroke First United Methodist Church or the Mt.
