Barbara Aldridge Obituary

September 30, 1929 ~ July 6, 2010 Barbara Lucas Aldridge of Christiansburg, Va.,, by the grace of God, and with a strong belief in eternal life, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, to be reunited with her loving husband of 55 years, William "Bill" Aldridge, and the Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven.
She was a loving wife, a caring mother and grandmother, a wonderful sister, an educator, a mentor, a matriarch, a friend, a devoted Christian and an inspiration to all of those who knew her.
She touched and comforted so many people with the kitchen door always open and her warm smile inviting them to come sit at the kitchen table and visit a while. Whether her own child or friend, she provided "motherly advice" for those in need. Her motivation and encouragement were offered for anyone she met and this provided strength for her children and friends. She touched many hearts, minds and souls. Her memory and words will carry us all through this life.
She was a high school graduate from Auburn High School, also graduating from Lynchburg College. She was a lifelong member of Snowville Christian Church.
She is survived by her children, Lee Aldridge, of New York, N.Y., Bill Aldridge, of Christiansburg, Va., Sam Aldridge and wife, Kathy, of Gilford, N.H., and Beth Aldridge, of Marshfield, Mass.; sister, Sara Lucas Brown, of Christiansburg, Va.; brothers, George Lucas and Jim Lucas Jr., both of Christiansburg, Va.; sister-in-law, Betty A. Hodges, of Christiansburg, Va.; grandchildren, Kelly A. Noto and husband, Steve, Brannon Aldridge, Andrew Aldridge, Forest Aldridge, Libby Aldridge and Eamon Aldridge; great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Noto; and many, many special friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010, at the Horne Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, at the Snowville Christian Church with the Rev. Jonathan Webster officiating. Interment will follow at the Lucas Family Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Medicine Shoppe of Christiansburg, Carilion Clinic Hospice and members of Snowville Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to "The Barbara and Bill Aldridge Memorial Fund for Youth" at Snowville Christian Church, c/o Mrs. William Guill, 906 Robertson Street, Radford, Va. 24141. My prayers are with you. Barbara was like a second Mom to me. She always had that special smile and sparkling eyes to let you know she cared. My best memories are at your kitchen table eating dinner and then playing cards most of the night. She is at peace with Bill now and both are looking down and so very proud of their children. My love and prayers to each of you.

Mrs. Aldridge was such a special LADY. She was a very important part of my teen years at Snowville Christian Church. I especially remember her beautiful laugh and warm smile. She will be mised so very much, but she leaves behind a wonderful legacy in her children and all of the people whose lives she touched. Lee, Bill, Beth, and Sam, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I will always remember Mrs. Aldridge as my favorite teacher. How I loved her English class because she genuinely loved her students even when we weren't so lovable. She encouraged me to read and often talked to me about the books I read making them more memorable. Her Christian walk was evident in everything she did. Maybe when we all get to heaven she will play "Bingo" on her guitar for us. May God comfort the family and all who knew and loved her. Class of 1975

What I know about your Mom... She loved your Dad... She had the most amazing eyes, they sparkled.. she loved children...she always made you feel like you were part of the family ( your Dad made you feel that way too)... she was so easy to talk to, You would share a story and she would listen and laugh and share one or two of her own stories. She loved each and everyone of her children and grandchildren. She was so proud of each and everyone of you. She is now at peace and with your Dad...smiling and proud. She and your Dad left the world their contribution, all of you. What a blessing they gave the world, the best of each of them, in all of you. That's what I know about your mom.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Kate, Ted and Meg

My first memory of "Mrs. Aldridge" is of her teaching our little class at Auburn to sing B-I-N-G-O and clap at the appropriate times. Later, in an English class, when I wrote about my dismal showing at a track meet, she encouraged me, saying I was being much too hard on myself. I recall, years later, how she supported the youth group at Snowville Christian Church, and served us yummy homemade treats in her cozy kitchen. And then there were all the Sunday mornings that she gifted the congregation by playing the organ (and tried to get us to pick up the pace!) - she probably never knew how much that offering was appreciated.
To my former Auburn schoolmates and friends -- Lee, Billy, Sam and Beth -- may God ease your grief now and remind you that she has passed from death into life.
