Bert Harris

Bert Harris, 88, of Roanoke Va., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Friday, July 9, 2010. He was born on June 2, 1922, to the late Bertha and Edward Harris. Bert was a hero to all who knew him. He was a faithful and loving man to his wife of 66 years. His family was the most important thing in his life and he cherished his grandchildren and greatchildren. Bert is survived by his wife, Freda McComas Harris; his only child and sonin-law, Sally and Walt Scott, of Roanoke, Va.; granddaughter, Kristin Nicole Bourne, of New York City; grandson and his wife, Brandon Bert and Stacy Catherine Bourne; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Ethan Bert and Catherine Brianna Bourne, of Roanoke, Va. Ethan and Catie were his pride and joy and brought a lot of pleasure to his life in recent years. Bert was one of 10 children and is survived by one brother, Walter Harris, of Huntington, W.Va.; and many special nieces and nephews. Bert was a survivor and Veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Air Force and later retired from Hoosier Engineering Company. Bert took great pride in his flowers and enjoyed the time spent talking with his friends at Buck Run Apartments including a special very dear friend, Linda Wright. We would like to thank Bert's beloved angels on earth, Dr. Philip Shiner, who has helped keep him his vibrant self since 1985, and more recently the caring Dr. Don Steinweg. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Estep officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.
