Iris Johnson Obituary

God called Iris Jeanette Wills Johnson, 65, of Narrows, Va., to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Jeanette was born in Rich Creek, Va., on November 9, 1944, and was the youngest daughter of Dalton Iris Wills and Wanda Tiller Wills. In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betsy Wills Proudfoot, in 2009. Jeanette is a graduate of Narrows High School and was a life long resident of Giles County. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where she served in the choir and Christian Women's Fellowship.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 49 years, Harless Benton (Benny) Johnson Jr., of the home. She is survived by her two devoted sons and their wives, Michael Wade Johnson and Donna, of Stuarts Draft, Va., and Harless Benton (Ben) Johnson III and Kristie, of White Gate, Va. The focus of Jeanette's attention and love has been on her grandchildren for many years. For them she leaves their hearts filled with loving memories, and a sense of belonging to a wonderful supportive family. She will forever enrich their lives. Her grandchildren are, Erin Beth Johnson, Kamron Leigh Johnson, Sierra Danielle Johnson and Ryan Benton Johnson. Their fondest memories are those of spending endless hours playing board games with their grandmother and family gatherings at the hunting cabin in White Gate, Va.
Mourning her loss is her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" Hayes and Jerry "Joe" Hayes, of Roanoke, Va.; a brother-in-law, Ronald Proudfoot, of Ravenswood, W.Va.; a nephew, Randy Hayes; nieces, Melinda Hayes-Ramsey, Julie Griffith, Rhonda Bennett, Rebecca McCoy and Lela Proudfoot; and special friends, Roger and Betty Jo Browning, of Narrows.
The family wishes to extend deepest gratitude to the compassionate care provided by Dr. Michael McMahon, as well as Carilion Clinic Hospice and to countless friends and neighbors for their emotional support.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 5, 2010, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows with the Rev. Chris Brown and the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows on Saturday, September 4, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jeanette, although we never met I knew you through your wonderful sister and brother-in-law, Dot and Joe. Your photo resembles Dot very much. Dot spoke of how freely you gave love and kindness all the while ingoring your own RA pain. I think you were were a remarkable woman whose absence will leave an irreplaceable void in the hearts of your family and friends. I'm looking forward to meeting you in glory.

Benny, words can not tell you the sorrow I feel upon the loss of Jeanette. I have missed seeing her in the choir but she is now singing in the heavenly choir. I have missed her booming laugh but she is now sharing that laughter with her heavenly family and friends. You and Jeanette have shared many years together and I am sure you have many good memories that will sustain you through this sorrow and for many years to come. God give you and your family peace and comfort.
