Lynn Herbert Obituary

Lynn Scott Herbert, 63, of Huddleston, Va., died on Sunday, June 20, 2010, at his residence, after a long courageous fight against Cancer. Lynn was born in Warren, Ohio, on January 27, 1947, a son of the late Helen and Wayne Herbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Herbert. Lynn is survived by his wife of 40 years, Loa May Herbert. Lynn received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and his masters of Science Degree in Industrial Relations from West Virginia University in 1972. He was raised in Clarksburg, W.Va., and graduated from Victory High School. He worked for the Federal Government in Washington, D.C., for 32 years. All but three years of that time was with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The last 10 years he served as the Director of the FHA Lender Approval Division in the Office of Single Family Housing. Lynn and Loa lived in Arlington, Va., for 33 years.
They built their dream home at Smith Mountain Lake in 1989, where they enjoyed spending their weekends for 15 years. They later retired to the lake in 2005. Lynn loved to ride motorcycles. He and Loa put over 110,000 miles on their 1995 Goldwing while touring the United States. He was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, serving as Chair of Council of Ministry, Sunday School Teacher and Usher. Lynn is remembered for his vast knowledge of trivial information, wonderful sense of humor, and his great story telling.
In addition to his wife, Lynn is survived by his Aunt Mary Tretera, Uncle Fred Smith, Uncle Eugene Smith, and Uncle Earl and Aunt Minnie Smith, all from Farmdale, Ohio, Aunt Phyllis Smith, of Vienna, Ohio, Aunt Marilyn Smith, of Cortland, Ohio; and numerous cousins. He is also survived by his wife's seven brothers and two sisters and their spouses; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 458, Moneta, Va. 24121 or to the Good Samaritan's Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018.
