Alger Batts Obituary

Alger (Buster) Batts Jr., 63, of Richmond, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. He was a wonderful and loving man who impacted the lives of many. Buster was born on July 18, 1945, to Alger Batts Sr. and Elizabeth Wright Batts, of Richmond, Va. He graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in 1963, where he was an exceptional basketball player. Buster continued with his talent at his beloved University of Richmond, where he achieved a bachelor's degree in business in 1967 as well as a master's of commerce. Anyone who knew Buster knew that he was a "Spider" through and through. He is survived by his loving sister, Victoria Higgins and brother-in-law, Edward Higgins, of Las Vegas; son, Trey "Al III" Batts and daughter-in-law, Gina Batts, of Richmond; daughter, Cory Gregory and son-in-law, Jeff Gregory; as well as beloved and precious grandsons, Cade Gregory (2) and Lathan Gregory (5) of Roanoke. He has many surviving friends among the Richmond Spider alumni and in the trucking industry as well. He will be joining his parents and his beloved brother, Frank, in heaven above. Buster was 6'8" tall a walking bear hug, whose kindness could be felt and seen from the moment he walked into a room. His generosity of heart was rare and precious. He will be missed beyond description, but his loving spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. The funeral is being handled by Bliley's Funeral Home, and services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2009, at Cannon Memorial Chapel, University of Richmond. The family will receive friends preceding the service, beginning 1 p.m. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing in Buster's memory to the University of Richmond Charity of choice, the American Heart Association, or the Virginia Trucking Association, 1707 Summit Avenue, Suite 110, Richmond, Va. 23230.

I met Buster when he and his family moved to Wake Forest, N.C. around 1957. We were classmates, then he became my first real boyfriend, something you never truly forget. He returned to Wake Forest for several reunions and we always thought of him as one of our group. I send love and deepest sympathy to his family on behalf of myself and the other members of the Wake Forest High School Class of '63.

I have just learned of Buster's passing from Jeff Butler this week. We have lost a good man and dear friend. I met Buster when I first came to UR as an assistant basketball coach in '78. He made me feel right at home when I first met him. My wife Sharon and I will miss him a great deal as many other family and friends will. Sincerely, Joe and Sharon Gallagher

My prayers go out to Buster's family. He was such a wonderful person and friend. I remember a time at Freeman when they were having a talent show, my sister, Rae Owens, went to Freeman and was a good friend of Busters. I was 3 years younger and in a big crowd of people being pushed around getting into where the show was going to be. Out of the blue a big man appeared, It was Buster (i didn't know him). He said hold on to my hand or you will get lost in this crowd. And he held my hand till we got in. He became my friend. Buster was the best. A gentleman, so sweet, and thoughtful...He will be greatly missed but he is in heaven with my sister Rae, who died at 26....I know they are talking now....and she's glad to see him.....but it's such a loss for all of us down here.....Buster we will never forget you or Rae. Go Rebels!

Love Always,

I first saw Buster in the chow line of the old refectory in 1963 after reading of his basketball exploits at DSF. Had the pleasure of knowing him over the next four years at UR. Always enjoyed seeing him at Spider functions or most recently at the grocery store. He always had a smile and a kind word. He will be greatly missed!

Buster taught me many things, but especially that as long as there is love, there will be Santa Claus. I have passed that along to my children and grandchildren. For as long as we all live, Buster will, too. I love him and you all dearly.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Buster's death. As a former neighbor, I looked forward to visiting with Buster over the years at the UR basketball games. A large presence in every sense, he will be missed. My condolences to his family.

To Buster's family,
I attended the University of Richmond with Buster in the mid-to-late 60's where I knew him as a fraternity brother. He was a great big, easy-going guy with an even bigger heart who genuinely cared about everyone. Throughout the pasing years after graduation, I did see him on a few occasions at Spider baskeball games. Buster didn't appear to have changed one bit from the kind person I had know so many years ago.

We should be so fortunate to be remembered the way Buster will be: a very good person who lived a very good life.

I did know Buster personally, but I have fond memories of him playing basketball at the University of Richmond. I was about 12 years old when my dad would take me to the old Richmond Arena to watch the Spiders play.(Tommy Green,Harvey Roberts,Spike Welch, Johnny Moates and Buster at center).I have been a Spider basketball fan ever since those days. (Class of 1976).Spider nation has lost a loyal alumni who will be greatly missed.
With deepest sympathy.
