RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The IAFF has lost one of its most dedicated leaders, former Virginia Professional Fire Fighters (VPFF) Secretary-Treasurer and,

WHEREAS, Duane became a Roanoke, Virginia, fire fighter and member of Roanoke Local 1132 in 1963. Not long afterwards, he began serving on his local’s executive board as secretary-treasurer, then as president and,

WHEREAS, as president of Local 1132, he worked hard to improve pension benefits, wages, health care benefits and working conditions. After Duane retired from the fire department in 1988, Local 1132 bestowed him with Emeritus status. In that capacity, he continued to serve as an invaluable advisor to the local and,

WHEREAS, in 1972, Duane was elected VPFF Secretary-Treasurer, a position he held until he retired in 2002. He holds the record of longest-serving IAFF officer in Virginia. At the state-level, Duane helped grow the membership of the VPFF by more than 5,000 members. Additionally, he lobbied for fire fighter presumptive legislation and other legislation important to fire fighters, Duane will be missed and we will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.

NOW IT BE RESOLVED THAT: Flowers and a Sympathy Card be sent to his memorial service, a donation in the amount of $200.00 be made in his name to our IAFF Local 2498’s 2011 American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Team as part of our 2011 goal and a check in the amount of $200.00 be made to the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters (Duane Dixon Scholarship Fund).

Dear Sue & Family: I was very saddened to learn of Duane's death. For many, many years he and I served the VPFFA . We worked state and local conventions as well as seminars. You probably don't remember me even though we have met on occasion. It was always a pleasure to be with Duane whether it be business or pleasure. He will surely be missed by all who knew him. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow.
