Dear Ruth, Evan, Collin, Jillian and all of your family,

We have never known a more humble man than Joe Derrick who truly took up the cross of Christ and followed Him wherever He led, even through the valley of the shadow of suffering and death. We are so privileged to have known him for the brief interval we shared in Hong Kong. Psalm 116:15

To Joe Derrick's beloved family -
Like Larry Goins, I too was a USNA classmate of Joe's. We went on a Summer training cruise together and shared some good times as young men in the prime of our lives. We bumped into each other periodically at the Academy, but alas we were not in the same Company. Our contacts were limited. Following graduation, I'm afraid that Joe and I never crossed paths again. But he had already made a lasting impression on me. I recall his always pleasant disposition, and ready smile. As an Alabama boy myself, I was familiar with the drawl and comfortable with his kindred spirit. I'm sorry for his loss to us mortals, and grateful that he touched my life ever so briefly, but lastingly. He is indeed with the Lord.

The prime of Joe Derrick's life didn't end at the Naval Academy. His better days were yet to come with his loving family. His best day was the day the Lord called him home. God bless! Jeff Cole, USNA '74, USMC (Ret). Stafford County, VA

To the Derrick family,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Joey. I graduated in the same class with him at Woodruff High School. I remember him as a kind, friendly and intelligent person. Know that there are a lot of his former classmates that have you in their thoughts and prayers at this time.

Ruth,
I was a USNA classmate of Joe's. I first met him at a Navy Blue and Gold meeting in Spartanburg, SC when we were still in High School (I graduated from Union High School 30 miles from Woodruff). He was a fine man. We will keep you and the family in our prayers.

Ruth,
I do not think we have ever met but I was a classmate of Joe's from Woodruff High School. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts at this time and several of his classmates have been on Facebook sharing the news. I always knew Joey (as we called him back in the day) to be a warm and sincere man; thoughtful and friendly as well as calm and even-handed with us all. May God grant you a calm peace as you deal with your loss and know that many of the Woodruff High School Class of 1970 send you our condolences.
