Howard Chilton Obituary

Howard Oren Chilton Jr., 89, of Union Hall, Va., passed away May 25, 2010. He was born in Roanoke, Va. to the late Howard Oren Chilton and Anna Bell. He served in the United States Navy-Air Corps during World War II. After a long career with Amoco Oil Company, he retired to Smith Mountain Lake. Howard was a 32 degree Mason and a member of Rocky Mount Lodge # 201, where he received his 50 year pin in November 2006. He was active in the community and loved sailing and gardening. He was the first citizen to serve on the Tri-County Policy Advisory Board. He served as Captain of the Neighborhood Watch for a number of years for Highland Lake Subdivision and was one of the first Water Quality monitors for the Smith Mountain Lake Association. He was a certified Master Gardener and served the Franklin County area. He was a Charter Member of the Roanoke Valley Power Squadron (Smith Mountain Lake Sail & Power Squadron) and was a Past Commander and Life Member of the United States Power Squadron. He was also a member and Past Rear Commodore of the Virginia Inland Sailing Association, and Charter Member and Past Commodore of the Blackwater Yacht Racing Association. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Allison Chilton; his two sons, David Michael Chilton, of Richmond, Va. and Daniel Reynolds Chilton, M.D., of Simsbury, Conn.; four grandchildren, Brian, Jana, Ariana, and Samantha; one sister, Annabelle Chilton Minter, of Richmond, Va.; as well as a great-grandson, Zackery Chilton. The family would especially like to thank Fork Mountain Rest Home for their love and care. A memorial service will be held at Pelican Point Yacht Club 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Katherine, Bob and I are sadden by the news that Howard crossed the bar. We always considered Howard as one of our most treasured friends. Please know that we will be thinking about you as you continue your life without him. Smith Mountain Lake won't be the same without Howard. Irene and Bob Chamberlin

Paul and I are sorry about the loss of Howard. Glad that you and he had a long and happy life together. Living on the lake and sailing was a pleasant way to enjoy your retirement together.
