May Hampton Hairston

May Hampton Hairston, 90, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday afternoon, May 8, 2010. She was born on April 27, 1920, in Eden, N.C. She was the eighth child of nine children born to the late Tyler and Cora Hampton. She was preceded in death by three brothers; three sisters; and two great-grandsons. May was a dedicated and faithful member of Sweet Union Baptist Church. Those left to cherish fond memories included one son, Essex (Carolyn) Hairston; one daughter, Dr. Freddie Laverne (Paul) Higgins; six grandchildren, Basil and Andre Hairston, of Roanoke, Melissa R. Hairston, of Keenesaw, Ga., Anitra Kenner, of Richmond, Va., Eric Higgins, of Orlando, Fla., and Matt Higgins, of Syracuse, N.Y.; 12 greatgrandchildren; three greatgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie Benton, of Roanoke and Sally Scales, of Virginia Beach, Va.; three devoted friends, Erie Foster, Becky Hairston and Cassie Powell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Sweet Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Edward T. Burton officiating. Interment will be held in Williams Memorial Park.
