Patrick Simpson Obituary

Patrick Simpson, 68, of Blacksburg, Va., died at his home on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Patrick loved the natural world, the words of Henry David Thoreau and Lao Tzu, his cello, and the works of J.S. Bach. He delighted in mountain walks, his beloved home and garden, and endless cups of tea. He is survived by his wife, Jana Ruble; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Anya Hinkle and Gen Kogure; cousins, David and Dixie Waters, and Dianne Ferey; stepniece, Tasia Green; and sisters-in-law, Susan Hord and Martha Lobdell and their families. Grateful thanks to friends near and far, colleagues at Virginia Tech, and the cushion of concern from the general Blacksburg Community. Threads of kindness connect us all. Thanks to all the healers who guided him through this passage. In remembrance of Patrick, contributions may be made to Carilion Clinic Hospice of the New River Valley, 540-633-9370 or to the New River Land Trust, 540-951-1704. The family is being served by Horne Funeral and Cremation Service, Christiansburg, Va., 540-382-2612. Online condolences may be sent to www.hornefuneralservice.com.

Jana,
I miss Patrick greatly. I can recall him so clearly from the 1960s and from our time at the Homestead. I value all the phone time I had with him over the past year as well. My prayers, metta, and hopes go to you. You are always, always welcome at our home. Peace.

Dear Jana and family, I am sad to hear of your loss. During my time in Blacksburg, I found Patrick to always be ready to share the best of himself with everyone around him. I enjoyed music-making and tea and soda bread, and walks in his garden.

Patrick was a dear friend. He was the first person I met in Blacksburg, when the Audubon Quartet arrived at VT in 1974. Blacksburg won't be the same with Patrick's great energy. We will all miss him.

Jana - I will miss Patrick. I was terribly saddened to hear of his passing. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember his kindness, the considered way in which he spoke and his lovely manners. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
