I just learned today that Velma was gone. She was my cousin on the Washington side and I truly valued having met her. She was such a very nice person and I'm sad she is no longer with us.

Granny was loved and respected by so many, and she touched all our lives in a very special way. She loved her family and remembered ALL of our birthdays. She was a decedent of George Washington and valued our family lineage. She knew her uncle who served in the Civil War. She had first hand knowledge of early events that history textbooks did not. She served as a direct link to the past. She saw so many things change in her lifetime, but stayed true to herself and her beliefs. She made beautiful quilts and delicious biscuits. She loved the outdoors and flowers. She had a soft spot for animals, and I know more than a few of us who inherited that trait! She was smart, talented and tactful. She graduated high school, remembered what she made on all her exams and played basketball. She rode a horse to school, and raised boys who raced cars. She never really learned what brakes were for, and drove her own car up until she was 90 or so. She regulary wrote in her diary, something that has been long forgotten these days. She was independent and self-sufficient, and she taught us all to be the same. I will cherish the memories of her for the rest of my life and can only hope to be as good of a person as Granny.

Granny was a very special person. She loved her family and was very proud of all of them. She never gave up on any of us. Always praying for her family to be safe and most of all to know her Lord. She had a strong faith that she shared with any and all. She was a hard worker and did not like laziness. She loved to tell of her life; the struggles and the accomplishments. She loved having children around her and she taught each one something. She loved animals and had a soft spot for strays even the human kind. She was a strong woman!! I thank God that He let me have her!
