Flannagan; his wife, Kathryn Middleton Flannagan; and his brother, Henry A. Flannagan Jr. He is survived by his sons, William H. Flannagan Jr. and wife, Meribeth, of Woodbridge, Va., and J. Michael Flannagan Sr. and wife, Deborah, of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Patricia F. Sarver and husband, Nelson W., of Roanoke, Va. Six grandchildren also survive Mr. Flannagan, Sarah F. Lewis and husband, Matthew, of Germantown, Md., Anne Hunter Flannagan, of Roanoke, Va., William H. Flannagan III, of Burke, Va., John Michael Flannagan Jr., of San Francisco, Calif., Kelly S. Williams and husband, T. Craig, of Midlothian, Va., and Kathryn S. Adkins and husband, R. Daniel II, of Vinton, Va.; as well as three great-grandsons; and favorite feline, "Pookie." Mr. Flannagan was born in Trevillians, Va., on September 14, 1920. Ham graduated from Hampden-Sydney College at age 19 with honors and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. While at Hampden-Sydney, he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He served in the United States Army Medical Administrative Corps during World War II. He was the member of the Pylon Society at Virginia Tech and a lifetime benefactor and a founder of the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club. Additionally, he was the 1980 Virginia State Chili Champion.
Ham served as President of [Carilion] Roanoke Memorial Hospital for 32 years before his retirement in 1986. Prior to that he was the Director of Hospitals for McGuire V.A. Hospital in Richmond and in 1951 he was appointed the first administrator of [Carilion] Franklin Memorial Hospital which opened in 1952. Under his leadership, Memorial and Crippled Children's Hospital became Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which ultimately led to the formation of Carilion Clinic: a seven-hospital, 12,000-employee health system that is the Valley's largest employer. He was named administrator of the hospital in 1954 and was instrumental in, among his many accomplishments, building a 325-bed addition to the hospital, developing Carilion's School of Nursing, building cancer and rehabilitation centers, opening the area's first intensive care unit, partnering with UVA Medical Center, establishing medical and administrative residency programs and growing Carilion into the health system it is today. Ham also served as a member of the State Board of Health.
Ham was granted an honorary Doctorate of Law degree by Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) in 1976; additionally H-SC inducted him into Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society in 1978. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Patrick Henry Society, Hampden-Sydney College as well. He was a Regent of the American College of Healthcare Executives as well as a Lifetime Fellow of the ACHE. Throughout his career he served on numerous civic and professional boards and organizations. He was Chairman of the Virginia-Carolinas Hospital Conference, the Southeastern Hospital Conference and, in 1963, became the Chairman Virginia Hospital Association.
Ham was a long-time supporter and educator of young hospital executives. Over the years he offered opportunities and training to numerous students in administrative residency programs from the Medical College of Virginia, Georgia State University, Trinity University, Brigham Young University and many other schools throughout the country. A generation of hospital executives in Virginia trained at Roanoke Memorial.
In recognition of those contributions, he was named an honorary alumnus of the Medical College of Virginia/VCU School of Healthcare Administration. He was also responsible, along with his friend, colleague, and fellow H-SC alum, Dr. Charles L. Crockett, for developing medical school affiliations and residencies at RMH, thereby firmly establishing medical education in the Roanoke Valley.
In 1982 Ham was selected one of "A Dozen Who Made a Difference A Salute to Those Who Had a Major Role in Building Roanoke." In 1986 he was awarded the Key to the City and was named Roanoke's "Citizen of the Year." He was a past Elder of Second Presbyterian Church and 50 year member of the Masonic Order, and a member of Lakeland Lodge #190.
The family will be receiving friends on Friday, May 14, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Second Presbyterian Church, 215 Mountain Avenue, SW, Roanoke, Va. There will be a memorial service 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Second Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to thank Laura and Cheryl from Helping Hands for all their care and kindness and all of the staff of 8 Mountain ICU at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the William H. (Ham) Flannagan Scholarship Fund, Medical College of Virginia Foundation, P.O. Was so sorry to hear about the death of Ham. I always remember him as such a very kind person. I often think about his mother whenever she would get sick in Chase Ciy she would say don't stop the Rescue unit until you get me to Roanoke Memorial, and Ham was always their waiting our arrival. May he rest in piece.

Thank you so much for all the nice messages. One that shocks me, is the one from Dr. Mark White. Are you Vickie White's younger brother that was so cute? What kind of Dr. are you? I loved the lake and still do. I wish I had a house there. Those were fun days! Thank you everyone for the nice words and stories. I never get tired of hearing them. Dad was a "Bigger than Life, Man and Dad" Thank you! Missy

Missy, Bill, and Mike, My deepest condolences to you and your families. I will always remember your dad for our days at the lake in the late 60's and early 70's. "Penicillin" point was a great place with a lot of great people at SML back then. I thought the world of your mom and dad. I remember the Sunfish sail boat he passed on to me, but I never learned to master it. I still have one constant memory, back probally on 1968 or 1969 your dad gave me his Honda portable gas powered generator from the boat. It would not start. He ask me as to take it home and see if I could fix it. I was 14 and now 41 years later, I still have it and it still runs. I know you will miss him, and so will the many friends and people he touched in their lives, personally and professionally.
Godspeed Mr. Flannagan

To the Flannagan Family:
My condolences on the loss of your father, grandfather and family member. The Roanoke Valley owes him quite a debt. He fought to raise the level of health care for the area, enabling us to stay home and find the care we need. I agree with Mr. Woo “The positive impact he had on healthcare in the Roanoke Valley and much of Southwest Virginia is hard to measure.” A very significant Roanoker has passed away. For those of us who remember his accomplishment there will always be a debt of gratitude.
Sincerely,
Gloria Radford Hilton

Missy, Bill, and Mike, My deepest condolences to you and your families. I had the pleasure and honor to work with Ham and the exceptional management team that was assembled under his leadership. I frequently think of him and the opportunities he gave to me and many, many other people. The positive impact he had on healthcare in the Roanoke Valley and much of Southwest Virginia is hard to measure. Suffice it to say that Ham Flannagan laid the foundation that enabled all of those who have come after him to contribute to the growth and quality of healthcare in the Carilion Clinic. We all owe your Dad a debt of gratitude for his generosity and accomplishments.

Missy, Mike, and Bill, I am so sorry for your loss. I loved HoDaddy too. He is responsible for me going to University of Pennsylvania and becoming a physical therapist. Then he guided my career by suggesting that I apply for director of rehab at a large health system in Norfolk. I loved to come visit him when I came to Roanoke. I will never forget fun times I had in your home and staying on the houseboat at Smith Mountain. I have many, many fond memories of HoMommy and HoDaddy. Please find comfort in knowing how much he was loved and respected.

To the entire Flannagan family and his close friends, I extend to you my sincerest condolences on the passing of Mr. Flannagan. Mr. Lucas Snipes wrote an eloquent tribute to Mr. Flannagan in this Legacy Guest Book – I cannot write or say it any better. On a personal level, Mr. Flannagan invited me to join his RMH staff and the hospital family in 1984. The debt of gratitude that I owe Mr. Flannagan is for welcoming a Yankee to the South, a place that became my home and still is. He exposed me to a learning experience that I will never forget and that benefits me to this day. His leadership style ought to be written in book form for those who did not have first hand experience of him to learn it. He was a masterful general with a staff of lieutenants and infantry who were the most loyal of followers as I have ever known. Unfortunately, I only knew him for a relatively brief period of time in the sunset of his control from the 14 Floor. In that short time, I had “a small taste of Ham,” most if it was an amazing experience, the rest of it – let’s just say, I stayed out of his way. Mr. Flannagan and I shared an Irish heritage that we often discussed. I will conclude with a variation of one of my favorite Irish blessings, “I hope you were a half an hour in Heaven before the Devil knew you were dead.”

Uncle Ham will be missed by so many... He was great for the Roanoke community. I moved to Michigan and he would say you sound like a Yankee, even though Michiganders have no accent. He would laugh and say "move back South". I'll miss you and I'm so glad I was able to talk with you in January. Love you!

This community owes a debt of gratitude to my old Boss - Ham Flanagan. He had a vision for health care in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. His vision was big, audacious, imaginative, and decades beyond the thinking of his contemporaries. It started with the patients and spread to the community as a whole. Ham wanted Roanoke to have its own medical school - as a compromise the U. Va. School of Medicine established a branch in Roanoke and placed a Dean of Medicine onsite. Now, 40 years later - the vision of medical students studying at a Roanoke-based medical school has been fulfilled.
When communities like Rocky Mount, Pearisburg, Bedford and Tazewell were struggling to keep their community hospitals viable - Ham saw an opportunity to share the expertise of Roanoke Memorial - and today each community remains well-served.
Ham's vision for a small struggling medical supply company in Richmond produced a $100 millon endowment designed to be used for the benefit of patients of the hospitals operated by Roanoke Hospital Association.
Thousands of doctors, nurses, lab techs, x-ray techs, and administrators now serve communities locally, around the country and around the world because of Ham's vision of creating educational opportunities by establishing training programs.
Thanks Ham. Your vision has benefitted all of us.
