Charles SMYTHERS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 27 to Dec. 28, 2012.
The Reverend Charles Gilbert Smythers was born March 16, 1934, and went to be with the Lord on December 24, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Hattie Smythers; his brother, Nile; sister, Pearl Smith; sister-in- law, Faye Smythers; and brothers-in-law, Samuel Shupe, Jack Frazier, and Walter Smith. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 53 years, Shelby Hurst Smythers; his three sons, Gary Smythers, Craig Smythers and wife, Kathy, Grant Smythers and wife, Wendy; sister, Helen and brother-in-law, R.J. Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews. The Reverend Smythers has four grandchildren, Andrew, Charles, Connor, and Caden, who lovingly remember him as grandpa.
The Reverend Smythers was an educator in the Carroll County Public Schools for 41 years, and was proud of the fact that he and his family had served the Carroll County school system for over 125 years. After retiring from education, he went into the Methodist ministry as an assistant pastor of his home church, Woodlawn United Methodist. He then served as interim pastor of several area churches and as pastor of Atkins United Methodist Church in Grayson County, retiring only when his health began failing.
He volunteered as chaplain for Mountain Valley Hospice, Twin County Hospice, Twin County Community Hospital and Golden Living Nursing Home. He considered his hospice experience to be one of his best accomplishments as a minister, because of the many lives he touched. He felt blessed and he found himself touched by the many people that were entering the last stages of their lives.
The funeral will be at Vaughan-Guynn- McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Church Cemetery immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Woodlawn United Methodist Church Construction Fund, P.O. Box 391, Woodlawn, VA 24381. A guestbook is available on-line by visiting www.vaughanguynnandmcgrady.com. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.

Shelby and family: My heart goes out to you and your family at this time. Charles Smythers spent his entire life in service to the community; first as a teacher, then as a principal, and finally as a minister. He loved people and spent the largest part of his life
in service to them. He will be greatly missed and our prayers and thoughts are with you, Gary, Craig, Grant and the remainder of your family in this time of sorrow.

Beth and I cannot begin to express our sadness at learning of Charles' departure. We share our sorrow with family and friends and many, many people who received the coaching, teaching, guidance, leadership through Hospice work and preaching of Coach Smythers. We loved him, he was my Mom and Dad's very best friend and he presided at Mom's funeral. God bless his memory and all the great mentoring he offered so many men that I grew up with! His place in heaven is well deserved and his work on earth lives on and on! Well done, Coach!

I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Smythers. He was principal at Hillsville Elementary School when my grandmother (Margo Gardner) worked in the cafeteria there and she thought the world of "Mr. Smythers"! When I attended Hillsville Intermediate he was my principal and I had the utmost respect for him. It was in later years that I began working at Mountain Valley Hospice and he became our Volunteer Chaplain. I couldn't ever call him Charles because of his being my principal in school. He was and will always be "Mr. Smythers". My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. God Bless.
