Robert Anderson Obituary

Robert O. Anderson
8/13/1929 - 12/13/2010

Robert O. Anderson died peacefully at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Roseville, California on Saturday, November 13, 2010. He was 81.
Born to Joseph O. and Catherine A. Anderson in Sacramento, California on August 13, 1929, Bob spent his early years in and around Edmonton, Alberta, his grandparent's ranch in Antelope, California and in Auburn, California, where he graduated from Placer High School in 1947.
Bob met Mercedes Mannion during his senior year at Placer High School. They were married two years later on October 16, 1949 in Reno, Nevada.
He attended Placer College in Auburn and Sacramento State College and became an elementary school teacher. After a short assignment at the Eureka Union School, he went on to teach for some 35 years at Dry Creek Elementary School. There "Mr. A." served as a seventh and eighth grade teacher, principal and superintendent of the Dry Creek Elementary School District.
In addition, Bob spent 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he achieved the rank of command sergeant major.
Bob loved flying. Early on he often flew with his father in a two-seater to go hunting in Montana. He didn't have the time or money to continue his avocation when his children were young, but by the early 1960s Bob was able to acquire a plane and take up flying again. He flew his friends and family to the California coast, remote parts of Idaho, Alaska, Mexico and across the country. He also participated in search missions for the Civil Air Patrol and flew commercially in the Sacramento area.
Bob is survived by his wife Mercy and his children John and wife Hyo of Shalimar, Florida, Rick and wife Suzanne of Roseville, California, and Janet McElroy and husband Fred of Gualala, California. He has five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Rex.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Lambert Funeral Home at 400 Douglas Boulevard in Roseville at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2010. A reception will follow at the Anderson home in Roseville.

Hello Mercy, I was your former letter carrier, last year and for six years. I was surprised and saddened by Bob's loss. It was so great when you both were at my "going-away" party last year...I have lots of pictures of you and Bob. (We were at Linda and Dave's house.) May God comfort you at this time, Love, Kelley

Mercy:

We were all blessed to have Bob be a part of our lives.

I have vivid memories of times with Bob - high school, skiing, fraternities, visits with his Mom and Dad on Finley Street, and visits with you and Bob at your place near Applegate. A long time ago, but all those memories are good memories.

My heart goes out to you Mercy.

Mercy, my heart goes out to you and your family. Bob was a good man and I enjoyed getting to know you both again since our High School days. I truly enjoyed working with Bob on the Reunion Committee.
Sincerely, Florence Ladeck

I am saddened to hear of Bob's passing. He was a wonderful role model for all of us. I remember him fondly, not only as a teacher but in his many roles at Dry Creek.
I often comment on the quality of the education we received, and I consider "Mr. A" to have been primarily responsible for ensuring our success, not only at Dry Creek but also as we moved into high school and our chosen careers.
The Anderson family must be very proud of the many contributions he made and the many lives that he influenced; his enthusiam for teaching and for students was always evident. Given that I am in the education world myself, I know how difficult it is to inspire students to do their best - Bob managed to do so while also inspiring the other teachers at Dry Creek to do the same.
I certainly appreciate the fact that "Mr. A" remembered me. I'm sure there are many Dry Creek alumni who feel the same way that I do - we were fortunate to have such a terrific teacher and mentor.
Please accept my sympathies and extend my condolences to your family.

All my best,
Brenda Claiborne

Mr. Anderson was mine (Linda Dexter) and my siblings' teacher at Dry Creek School during the late 1940s/50s. He taught me and many others how to dance and participate in our dances at school. I have so many, many fond memories of him.
