Robert Anton Smircich passed away with the love of his life Kelly Smircich by his side on October 21, 2010 just before midnight. He was 85 years young.
He was a loving husband and family man known for his generosity. Bob had a true passion and a love for life, his family and his friends. Bob was known as "Bingo Bob" at The Oaks of Auburn where he spent the last three years of his life with Kelly. In 1992 upon retirement Bob and his wife Kelly moved to Auburn after 35 years as a building engineer with ATT. He was the founder of the Country Store at The Oaks where he served the needs of his fellow residents with weekly shopping trips to stock the store and meet special requests. In his earlier years he and Kelly traveled the globe building a treasure trove of memories.
He was a treasure to all that knew him always offering a helping hand. He was a master cabinet maker and fix-it man who selflessly shared his talents helping others. He served as a Mason and a volunteer sheriff for Contra Costa County. He also was a member of the Congregational Church.
Bob was born to John and Virginia Smircich in New Orleans, LA., where his father, a World War I army veteran, supported the family as a fisherman. Bob followed the tradition to serve in the army and fought for his country in the South Pacific during World War II. He was an all American supporting his country in word and deed. His favorite activities were reading war and western stories, deep sea fishing and hunting.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Paul, John and Peter Smircich and son Michael Smircich. Bob is survived by his wife, Kelly, his children Jack Sunseri, Elizabeth Sunseri, grandchildren Steven Smircich, Leanne Smircich McDowell, Russell Sunseri and Cara Sunseri Helberg. All who met him said he was a big hearted gentle soul and a true gentleman. A military celebration of life ceremony will be announced in the near future. His family has requested in lieu of flowers donations be made to Sutter Auburn Faith Hospice.
