Fred Rather Obituary

FRED L. RATHER, 68 MACHESNEY PARK - Fred L. Rather, 68, of Machesney Park passed away Sunday, June 12, 2011, in his home, surrounded by his family. Born Jan. 4, 1943, in Sweetwater, Tenn., the son of Raymond and Lee Rather. Married Paula Littlejohn on Nov. 1, 1969, in Belvidere. He retired from Abar Ipsen Industries after 42 years of employment. Proudly served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Paula Rather; sons Tony, Terry and Raymond Rather; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers Bill and Dale; and many other family members and friends. Service at 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services, 7000 W. State St., with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 16. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

I worked with Fred for nearly 20 years at Ipsen and have known him for almost 40 years. Fred always had a smile on his face, a positive attitude and outlook on life, and always willing to lend a helping hand. My condolences to the entire Rather family for the loss of Fred. Paula and family, I lost one of my best friends today and I am so sorry for your loss..."Leon" was such a great-great person...I knew him for 58 years as we lived next door and I grew up with him. I thought the world of "Leon", he was like a brother to me.I know Herb thought of him the same way! I'm so happy to say he was a good friend of mine. Fred was a guy that always had a smile on his face. I worked with him a number of years, a great guy. Always had to stop by and say hello a minuites in the morning there at work. So sad to hear of your loss.
