Rodney Tulonen Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Rodney Arthur Tulonen, 67 of Springfield, Vermont, formerly of Fitchburg, Ma., died May 30, 2015, at Glencliff Home in New Hampshire after a courageous struggle with early onset Alzheimer's for over ten years.

He leaves his wife of 23 years, Patricia Magrosky of Springfield, Vt.; a son, Gregory Tulonen, and his wife, Kate, of Auburn, Maine; two stepsons Matt and Nick Matush of Springfield, VT; two grandsons Connor and Riley Tulonen; his mother, Anna Tulonen of Fitchburg, Massachusetts; two sisters Joanne Tulonen of Seattle, WA., and Elaine T. Pierce and her partner, Joel Slutsky, of Alstead, New Hampshire; a long-time friend Claude Caswell of Rochester, New Hampshire, and many nieces and nephews. Rodney Tulonen was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in 1947.

He was predeceased by his father, Reino K. Tulonen, and his sister, Betty I. Tulonen.

Rod will be remembered as a champion in every possible way:

He was an athlete winning a state championship in cross-country and track at Fitchburg High School and a record-setting runner in the two mile at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he was captain of the Bowdoin cross-country team.

He was a scholar. Rod was valedictorian of his graduating class at Fitchburg High in 1965, earned a Bachelor's Degree in English with honors from Bowdoin College; a Master's Degree in Secondary School Administration at Antioch College and a Master's Degree in Internet Strategy Management from Marlboro College.

Most of all, Rod was a man who championed others, particularly the disadvantaged and vulnerable. As principal of Riverside Middle School, in Springfield, Vermont, Rod was fair to every child, but he was particularly protective of the children who needed extra attention. He was the kind of man who trained kids for the Special Olympics, stood up to abusive parents and bullies, fought fiercely for his students and teachers and made every school he worked in a safe, positive place where everyone could thrive. He was the kind of man who went the extra mile for anyone who needed his guidance and his strength. Rod's family, friends and colleagues called him The Principal of the World because he exuded strength, courage and honesty.

He jousted with the world with mischievous bravado, was a photographer with a keen eye for detail, and a poet whose words touched the heart. He was the twinkle in the eye of fate, the light in every room he occupied. There was no joke too silly for him to tell, no prank too childish to pull out of his hat. He was the man who refused to be dull and predictable. He was the handsome hero who could laugh at himself most of all and so made everyone around him more free and joyful, especially children - and those who loved him.

As a husband to his cherished Pat, father to Greg, stepfather to Matt and Nick, grandfather to Connor and Riley, son to Anna and Reino, brother to Joanne, Betty, Elaine and Claude; colleague and friend to all fortunate enough to share life with him, Rod was a man who brought love and laughter into every day. He was witty and playful, with a flair for the dramatic and unexpected. He was both eloquent and unpretentious, both pragmatic and idealistic. He was our Don Quixote, our brave and gentle warrior, forever young. No one loved life more than Rod and no one was more willing to share that joy. The world will never see another Rod Tulonen.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Weathersfield, 79 Weathersfield Center Road, Perkinsville, Vermont 05151, on June 26, 2015, at 2 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund (a fund that supports research to find a cure for Alzheimer's) in memory of Rodney Tulonen or to a charity of your choice.

Rod will never be forgotten! What a bright spot in the school day whenever I saw him chatting with a teacher, dealing with a student or when I went to him for help. Always so personable, helpful and positive. So sorry to lose him so soon. Blessings as you continue in your lives with the whole that nothing else can fill.

I'll never forget Rod. Some of my fondest memories at Riverside Middle School were of him and how he related to all the students. He was a father figure to many of them and a mentor. He and Pat were a beautiful couple and it was obvious how much they loved each other and how devoted she was to him. I first met Rod when he interviewed me for a Special Needs position at Riverside back in the '90s. He was an extraordinary human being. My heart goes out to Pat and his family. My prayers and thoughts will be with her and them. I feel so privileged that I was able to have known Rod . He was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

To Anna and the Girls,
It's been along time since Summit St. and FHS. Rod was one of the gang and a great classmate and a special friend. I'll miss his mischievous smile and quirky little sayings. Seems like yesterday we were hanging out at the Lunch figuring out our next escapade.
The crew is getting smaller. Love you Rod!!!

To Joanne and the rest of Rod's family, my sincerest sympathy for your loss. Although I have not seen Rod for 50 years, I remember him as a real class act even as a high schooler. My deepest condolences to all of his family.

It's strange, because for about a week now, Rod's name and image have been popping into my mind for no reason. I guess he was saying hi from heaven! Rod was a great guy and a wonderful educator. As principal at RMS when my son was there, and as principal at SHS when my daughter was there, I always felt fortunate and knew my kids had such a good role-model in Rod. I enjoyed his sense of humor and his photography. I have so many fond memories of him. The world has lost one of the good ones. Pat - my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Rest easy, Rod.

Rod was an amazing principal to the middle school students. As a parent we saw him at EVERY event. All he needed to do was look at a student who might have been misbehaving and the behavior stopped. He was fair to all and they knew what to expect. The world needs more people like Rod. Condolences to the family.

My best memory of Rod was when he and his assistant principal showed up on stage riding a motorcycle dressed in that same garb. The kids loved it and them. Thank you Rod Tulonen for all the fun, education and love you shared with all around you. You have been sorely missed in the community and will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who loved you .. which were most everyone who knew you! Pat, so sorry for your loss and for each of the family. Prayers are with you all.

Rod was an exemplary educator. He was a roll model for students and a leader to fellow teachers. As a student I remember the teachers' excitement and pride upon his return to Springfield Schools in 2003 as principal of SHS. It was like a homecoming of sorts, everyone had a spring in their step. "Rod's back!" He had the ability to make people know they were appreciated and know that he was on their team. He will be greatly missed by the multitude of lives he positively impacted, all blessed to have known him.
