Joyce Tiemann Obituary
WEST LEBANON - Miss Joyce Molineux Tiemann died on Feb. 20, 2018.
She was the daughter of Col. and Mrs. (Isabel Carr) Philip Wyeth Tiemann (deceased). The family had moved in 1933 to Windy Hill, Cavendish, VT, from Chatham and East Orange, NJ. Although Miss Tiemann had lived away from the family homestead for many years, she returned there in 1971 and remained until 2000, when she moved to Chester, VT.
She attended the Cavendish Center School, schools in Fort Knox and Louisville, KY, Fort Benning and Columbus, GA, Brattleboro, VT, Brimmer & May School in Boston, received a Bachelor of Secretarial Science from Bryant College (now University), then located in Providence, RI, and a diploma in Lay Ministry from Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge, PA.
Before retiring, Miss Tiemann worked from 1973 until 1986 as administrative secretary to the director of nursing at Springfield Hospital, Springfield, VT, after which she assisted and volunteered at what is now the Cavendish Fletcher Community Library in Proctorsville, VT. Prior to returning to Vermont in 1971, she worked at Holy Cross (Episcopal) Monastery, West Park, NY, Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College, Stanford University, CA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, and Time Inc., New York City.
She had traveled both in the United States and on the continent; in 1953, was part of the crowd vying to see Queen Elizabeth II on her coronation day and then worked for our Air Force in England for two years, frequently visiting there over the next 40 years. In 1963, she traveled by ship to Australia, working in both Adelaide and Sydney and in 1965, toured in New Zealand enroute back to the United States via the Panama Canal. Later, she toured in both South America, where she had cousins, and Canada. In the fall of 2013, Miss Tiemann had a glorious trip, traveling to Great Britain for six weeks. While in England, she visited a dear friend whom she had met on June 3, 1953, and had not seen for 25 years! Her trip included London, Bath and parts of Cornwall in England, as well as St. David's in Wales, northern Scotland and the Orkney Islands, and the Isle of Iona, before returning to London.
Most recently, Miss Tiemann lived at Quail Hollow, West Lebanon, NH, where she moved in early 2010 and became a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church. Previously, she was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Chester, VT, and had worshipped at Gethsemane Episcopal Church in Proctorsville, VT, for nearly 30 years, filling a number of leadership roles in both congregations. For several years, she served as diocesan (VT) coordinator for the (national/international) Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief (now Episcopal Relief and Development). She had been a member of the Springfield Area Business and Professional Women and over the years, she was at sometime on the boards of Fletcher Farm Foundation, the then Black River Health Center in Cavendish, the Cavendish Fletcher Community Library, the White Library in Chester, the Cavendish Historical Society and a Hospice volunteer.
Keeping active after her move to nearby Hanover, Miss Tiemann took part in many of the interesting classes offered by the Aging Resource Center of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and volunteered at the Prouty and other events supporting the Norris Cotton Cancer Center of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. More recently, she was a member of the United Valley Interfaith Project, interested in helping establish a vehicle for seniors to age in community and in their own homes with a health program to make this possible.
She most enjoyed attending productions at the Hopkins Center in Hanover, especially the classical music. In more quiet moments, she liked to read and to pursue all things English and about Great Britain.
Miss Tiemann is survived by her brother, Philip Wyeth Tiemann Jr., of Augusta, ME; as well as 10 nieces and nephews, nine grandnieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and -nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Ann Tiemann Farrar, of Andover, VT, and her sister-in-law, Donna Tiemann, both in 2014.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Hanover, NH, on March 17, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception. At a later date, there will be a private burial service at the family plot in Mount Union Cemetery in Cavendish Center, VT.
In lieu of flowers, an offering may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH (Att: Hilary M. McMillan, One Medical Center Drive, HB 7070, Lebanon, NH 03756); or to the Vermont Foodbank Inc., 33 Parker Road, Barre, VT 05641.
