Stanley Yankowski Obituary

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. - Stanley P. Yankowski, 88, died April 17, 2011, at Southside Hospital.

A native of Ludlow, Vt., he was the son of Frank C. and Amelia Yankowski, and graduated from Black River Academy in 1941.

He was assigned to the U.S. Army 250th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II. He attained the rank of first sergeant and was awarded a Bronze Star. He retired from the Army Reserves at the rank of captain in 1963.

Mr. Yankowski received a B.S. in 1950 from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt., and an M.A. from the University of Vermont in 1954. He taught at Winooski (Vt.) High School from 1954-1957.

In Brentwood, he was a social studies teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal of Brentwood Sonderling High School. He retired in 1982 as principal of both Ross and Sonderling High School. He was an usher of St. Anne's Catholic Church, as well as a Section XI basketball referee and a baseball umpire.

Survivors include a sister, Virginia Gurdak of Ludlow, Vt.; five children, Sylvia Graf, Mary Anne, both of Brentwood, Stanley of Waldorf, Md., Michael of Sayville and Br. John of Clear Creek Monastery in Hulbert, Okla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Peter and Frank Yankowski; two sisters, Alvina Tuomey and Jenny Peniuk; and his wife, Veronica, in 1991.

The funeral service and burial was held Wednesday, April 20, in Brentwood.

My condolinces to the Yankowski family, It was he and Mr. Reese, who started my career in Electronics, and i expanded my knowledge into Missile Systems, Flight Control and Weapons, Communications, and today Micro-Computer Systems, Class of 74, God Bless..

My condolinces to the Yankowski family, I was a student at Brentwood High 1967-70 and remember him as A man with compassion for his students I am sure he is remembered with a smile as I have remembering all the phone calles he made to my mom to try to keep me out of trouble. I saw him a few years ago and reconized him, he remembered me after I told him my maden last name, he told me my first name and my Mom's name.
Mr Yankowski touched many many lives,and will be remembered by me forever. Thank you Mr Yankowski for keeping after me while I was a problem.( i TURNED OUT OK THANKS TO HIM.) RIP A GREAT MAN WHO WAS AS BIG IN HIS HEART AS HE WAS IN HEIGHT.

My sincerest condolences to the Family of Stan Yankowski. He will be remembered by many of the faculty at Sonderling as one who appreciated hard work and excellence. He often used the compliment," She can cut the mustard." May he rest in peace , and be remembered for his contributions to the Brentwood community.
