Robert DEERING Obituary


DEERING, Robert ''Bob'',
PhD, FASLA
Bob Deering, 90, died peacefully at his home in Davis, CA, Dec. 1, 2010. Born in Augusta, Maine, to Arthur and Freda (Bowman) Deering, Bob served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He earned a Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture in 1948 from Cornell University. In 1949, Bob joined the faculty at UC, Davis, pioneering the study of shading and passive solar site design. He was awarded a Fulbright to the Netherlands in 1954 and began a private practice in 1955 that included landscape design for the Nut Tree in Vacaville. In 1960, Bob began a 17-year career with California State Parks. Upon retirement, he taught landscape architecture at King Faisal University in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and was landscape architect for KFU's Passive Solar Cooling Project. In 1996, Bob was honored as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Bob is survived by his wife Alice (Dake) of Davis; sisters, Mary Wirths of Falmouth, Maine, and Helen Piper of Damarascotta, Maine; daughter Roberta Deering (husband Greg Ptucha) of Sacramento; son Paul Deering (wife Annalisa) of Davis; daughter Carol Deering (partner Doug Kennedy) of Berkeley; and five grandchildren. Burial will be in the historic Deering Cemetery in Denmark, Maine.

I remember Bob when we worked together at the then State Beaches and Parks. We were in Goleta together for a while after Sacramento. And Alice telling us how she liked to dress when she did house work. Those were the days, for sure.
