Lee MITCHELL Obituary

MITCHELL, Lee
D. Lee Mitchell, III 'Fuzzy' 77 of Woodland, California, passed away at his home August 31, 2013. Lee was born May 3, 1936 in Berkeley, California, the son of Dickey Leroy Mitchell, Jr. and Beulah Marie Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother Edward Lee Mitchell. He is survived by his wife Shirley Carlson, a sister Monta and husband Richard Wagar of Bellingham, Washington; a brother Paul Mitchell and wife Madeleine of Reedley, California; and six children: Roxanne Mitchell of Rancho Murietta, California; Roy Mitchell of Anchorage, Alaska; Kit Mitchell of Santa Rosa, California; John 'JJ' Johnson of Prescott, Arizona; Timothy Mitchell of Rocklin, California; and Gail Mitchell of Davis, California; 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

As per his request, he will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at the Veterans Memorial Center at 203 East 14th Street, Davis, California on September 29 from 2:30-6:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Woodland Community College Lee Mitchell Bike Rack Fund, or a Lee Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Book Fund or to the Wayfarer Center Christian Mission, 277 4th Street, Woodland, CA.

Lee started his work career stocking produce in grocery stores and went on to earn a Bachelors degree from Humbolt State University and a Master's degree from the University of California at Davis, California. He embraced and loved teaching. He was one of 12 pioneer professors at Woodland Community College through the Yuba Community College District in 1974. Over a span of 35 years, he taught Anthropology, Ecology, Geography, Geology and Oceanography. He took great joy in teaching, often providing his own funds for books for students who had limited financial resources.

He was a member of several bike clubs, including the Davis Bike Club, Grizzly Peaks Cycling Association, and Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA). He was a three-time record setter in Race Across America (RAAM), a 3000 mile, non-stop bicycle race from California to Maryland. He and three team members hold the current bicycling record in RAAM for a team whose age averaged 75. "Fuzzy" Mitchell spent many years volunteering as a Supply and Gear (SAG) wagon driver, supporting other serious bicyclists in RAAM, Race Across Oregon, the Hoodo, and the 508. Lee's Red Bike Van is an icon to many enthusiastic bicyclists. He was a true 'SAG Angel.'

Lee will be remembered for his unfailing smile, his signature 'Santa Claus' look, his never-changing wardrobe, and his red mini-van blasting music to get you over the next hill. Most of all, we'll remember him for his unfailing SAG support, his generosity of spirit, and his single-minded concern for the safety of cyclist on the road.

Lee possessed a unique set of skills that made him a respected teacher, mentor and leader. He gave much of himself in time, money, and energy to cycling, teaching and family; his passion to help others was unparalleled.

Actions, more than words, define a person, and the memory of Lee will certainly be played out in remembering all the wonderful acts you did for your special community, family and friends. I was so fortunate to sit in two of your classes - a special teacher, straight shooter with the know how to transfer scientific knowledge. A few years later my life was again blessed by being involved in biking. Whether you were sagging an event I rode or participating as a volunteer together, your smile and beaming energy will never be forgotten. Thanks for the final hug when you got out of your sag wagon at this years Davis Double. Your personality, generosity and glad heart will always be remembered.

Fuzzy Oh Fuzzy, you gave me my first crew captain lesson on how to properly support a cyclist on the road. You helped me finished a century ride in Death Valley with your wise and witty words of inspiration. Angels don't wear white robes. You were our bewhiskered Guardian angel that drove a red van blaring music to help spirit every cyclist home to their journey's end. Memories and blessings to Lee's family and tailwinds to Lee's spirit, a great mentor and friend.

We will miss you in the neighborhood Lee. Your Santa costume when the kids trick or treated and the SAG van in the drive way. Mostly we will miss your great smile, your waive and our conversations in the front yard. You and your red socks will never be forgotten.

Love and Peace,

Lee helped Wayne and I on so many rides. His cheer and support were always an inspiration to help us achieve when we began to doubt that we could. We will treasure his memory and know that he will be sorely missed. Our sincerest condolences to all of the Mitchell family.

Lee-words aren't enough to express the care and joy you brought to life. You're most excellent support at cycling events across the state and the country will never be forgotten by any who were recipients of your generosity! I watched you take care of many for a long time now and you never asked for a thing in return - only that they get to the finish line. Your encouragement to get to the finish line will go on forever in the hearts and minds of all those folks rolling down the many roads you followed them on. Miss you and love you my friend. Fuzzy hugs were always the best hugs...here's one last big one to you.

A few words are insufficent to recognise the absolute divinity of a Lee Mitchell inspired rebound from intensive care. Lee, you inspired the celebration for eight days across America. You will always be The Greatest.

Roxanne, Kit, Tim and Gail my condolences on the loss of your dad.
I took his Anthropolgy class way back, he was an awesome person. I loved seeing him riding his bike all the time and recently saw him when he came in to get his marriage license. He inspired me to take care of myself and take up running I joked with him about one day taking up riding my bike because I am getting older.. what a smile.. RIP LEE now you can ride in heaven..

Mr. Mitchell was the best teacher to have. He always had a fun exciting class that never made you bored. His classes were the ones that you didn't realize the class time was finished because everyone was so focused and having a good time. It wasn't unusual for his classes to run over time and the next class would be waiting in the hallway. I use his teaching methods in my own classrooms and hold him up as an example of what a teacher should be to coworkers. Yuba/WCC will never be the same without him. RIP Mr. Mitchell.

Lee, there are no words for what you meant for me. You have shared my dreams and my highest times and some of my weakest and weariness times. Those times that makes life so living! Your smile of pride when we reached our goals! The only thing I did not share with you was your love for Dennis diners ;).
I believe your new role is to be bike angel crew chief to protect us still down here pedalling around...and you look down on us and you smile! You betcha!
Love you!
