Fred JACKSON Obituary

JACKSON, Fred L. June 24, 1922 - June 20, 2014 Born in 1922 in San Bernardino, Calif. His parents were Gertrude and Fred Jackson. His identical twin brother, Ensign Francis O. Jackson, was a U.S. Naval Dive Bomber pilot, who was killed in action in 1944 on the USS Lexington in the Philippines. Fred graduated as a Civil Engineer from UC Berkeley in 1944. He was married to Alice L. Williams of Corning, Calif. from 1945 to her death in 2011. Their children are Francis 'Frank,' Alan, and Lorene, and AFS daughter Mary Smail of Selkirk, Scotland; daughters-in-law Pam and Lyra; grandchildren Joshua, Julia, Greg, Doug, Aaron, Alex and Jeffrey; great-granddaughters Jolee Grace and Haylee Jo Alice. Granddaughter Anna predeceased him. Fred had a very distinguished 40-year career with the California Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1984. He was responsible for determining the location of many California freeways. He was recognized with Senate Rules Committee Resolution #2995 on June 8, 1984 for his state service, and was a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers. He began his career in Bishop and Mojave, and spent many years in San Bernardino and Redlands before being promoted to chief of design in the CalTrans Sacramento headquarters. Upon retirement, he helped Sierra Christian Church of Loomis convert a barn into a church. He and Alice traveled to Europe, Australia and Central America, and made annual trips to British Columbia and Alaska for salmon and halibut fishing. He was an avid gardener, woodworker, biker and boater. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service Saturday, July 5 at 2 p.m. at Sierra Christian Church, 5645 Rocklin Rd., Loomis, CA 95677. Memorial contributions may be made to Sierra Christian Church or charity of your choice.
