Betty Lou P. Black

CONCORD - Betty Lou Patterson Black passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Born Feb. 17, 1929 in Rowan County to James A. and Catherine Cauble Patterson, Betty graduated from China Grove High School and from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory.

She married Harold D. Black on June 15, 1951, and he preceded her in death in 1999.

Betty loved teaching and she touched many young lives in the classroom. In addition to teaching both high school and elementary grades in the public schools, she also founded, directed, and taught the first church kindergarten at Calvary Lutheran church in the 1960's and 1970's. In addition, she shared her love of music in teaching private piano lessons for many years. Betty loved reading, cooking, and traveling.

An active and involved member of Calvary Lutheran Church for many years, she taught, worked with various committees, helped to organize the church library and enjoyed her many friends there.

Betty is survived by three children, Janice Utt and her husband Jim of Maryville, Tenn., David H. Black and his wife Starr of Concord, and Catherine Anne Thomas and her husband Mark of Dunwoody, Ga; siblings, Frank Patterson of China Grove, the late Carl Patterson of China Grove, Nancy White of River Hills, S.C., and Ann Phillips of Gainesville, Ga. Betty had nine grandchildren, Ashlyn Sinquefield, her husband Chad and their two daughters, Zoe and Bree, of Charlotte; William, Susanna, and Emma Grace Black of Concord; Emily Utt of Maryville, Tenn.; Meredith Utt of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Rebecca, Ross, and Reed Thomas of Dunwoody, Ga.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 26 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.

Service: There will be a worship service in celebration of her life on Monday, April 27, at 10:30 a.m. At Calvary Lutheran Church, 950 Bradley St., Concord.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Betty's memory may be honored with contributions to the Youth Ministries Scholarship Fund of Calvary Lutheran Church, Heifer International, or to the charitable organization of one's choice.
