Robert McKay Obituary

Robert Riggs McKay
1920 - 2013
Robert Riggs McKay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2013.
Bob was born on September 4, 1920, in Ogden, Utah, to President David O. and Emma Ray Riggs McKay, the youngest of seven children. Young Bobby spent his early years in London, England, where his father presided over the European Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, and in Huntsville, Utah.
Bob attended West High School where he was voted Senior Class President and lettered in basketball and track. He then went to the University of Utah where he graduated in speech with a minor in English. He served as president of the Associated Men's Students, president of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, president of Theta Alpha Phi National Drama Fraternity, and the national president of Intercollegiate Knights National Service Fraternity. He was a member of the Owl and Key Honor Society, acted in several theatrical productions at Kingsbury Hall, and spent a summer in Canada attending the Banff School of Fine Arts. He especially loved the months he spent working in Yellowstone National Park with his brother, Edward, during his college years.
After graduating from the University of Utah, Bob served an honorable thirty-month mission for the LDS Church in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was a dedicated missionary who treasured the lifelong friendships he made in Argentina. He also loved speaking Spanish for the rest of his life. Upon completing his mission, Bob served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed with the 180th Medical Control Unit in Okinawa and Korea.
Bob married his sweetheart, Frances Ellen Anderson, in 1946. She has almost forgiven him for arriving thirty minutes late to the temple because he was buying a car for the honeymoon. President McKay, a counselor in the First Presidency at the time, sealed the couple for time and eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Bob's quick wit and optimism, and Frances Ellen's accompanying sense of humor made for a happy sixty-seven year marriage.
Bob was absolutely devoted to his family and they lovingly dubbed him "Daddy Bob." Daddy Bob constantly treated his family to Snelgrove's chocolate malts, ensured they had a never-ending supply of Cummings Chocolates, and occasionally (but not often) let them win a hand of the family card game, Pirate Rook. Daddy Bob made holidays especially memorable. For instance, every Easter, Daddy Bob created treasure hunts with clever poetic clues that sent his children and grandchildren all through his home and backyard, his horse stables, and meaningful places throughout the city to find more clues, candy, and treasure. Daddy Bob lived to make his family happy.
Bob was deeply devoted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served for ten years in the presidency of the Temple Square Mission with President Richard L. Evans and Marion D. Hanks. He served for several years in church callings, including service in the stake high counsel and stake presidency. He served as a counselor in four bishoprics, and served for many years as a Sunday School and Gospel Doctrine teacher.
Bob and Frances Ellen opened, owned, and operated McKay Jewelry Company for 62 years. It became an establishment on Main Street in Salt Lake City. Bob's integrity endeared his customers to him for generations. In fact, many of his customers at the end of his career were the grandchildren of the customers he assisted in the beginning of his career. Bob was unceasingly cheerful; a couple once walked into McKay Diamonds just because, in the husband's words, "he wanted to show his wife a happy man."
Bob loved animals of all kinds, but he especially loved Arabian horses. He and Frances Ellen founded the Diamond M Arabian horse ranch. Showing and breeding fine Arabian horses became the ultimate family dream. Though the Diamond M had humble beginnings - the McKays were thrilled at their first horse show when their horse won third place . . . out of three horses - their Arabians eventually won many awards at the regional and national level.
In addition to being an active member of the Utah Arabian Horse Club, other civic involvement included membership and service as president of the Sugarhouse Rotary.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers, and his two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Frances Ellen; his children, Marianne, David (Nancy), Suzanne, and Robert (Cynthia); his eight grandchildren, Robert Cox, Scott (Jessica), Heather (Robb), Michael (Melanie), Melanie (Troy), Jeffrey, Christina (Haloti), and Robert McKay; and his fifteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 17 at 12:00 noon at the Garden Heights Ward Chapel, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South), where friends may call from 10:45 to 11:45 A.M. before the services. There will be a viewing on Thursday, May 16, 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 "N" Street.

Stephen Snow

May 29, 2013

I am Stephen Snow, son of Charlene Scowcroft Snow. These names will not be familiar to family members who read this but would be instantly familiar to Robert McKay. I escorted my mother into the shop on Main Street countless times over the several decades. She, an Ogden Scowcroft, and I had many wonderful chats with Bob when there was a quiet moment or two. We tak=lked of his parents, Ogden, Huntsville, the big house on South Temple and more. I remember Bob's mention of his dad's concerns about the building of Pine View Dam/Resrevoir in the 1930s. These are great memories.
I personally was in the shop the last day Bob was there three or four years ago. I bought a watch. walked out with tears in my eyes.
We have talked over the years about how remarkable it is that in the first decade of the 21st century the son of a
man born in 1874 was active and doing business on Main Street. His passing is truly the end of an era. The last child of his parents and the last vestige of the Main Street I knew and loved growing up in the 1950s.
Best wishes to Bob's family at this time.

Best wishes to you at this time.

Dave and Marianne,
I'm sorry I received the news of your dads passing too late to make it to the funeral. I would have loved to have been there to give both of you a hug. Lot of fun memories, feed the horses and going to horse shows in Murray, playing baseball, playing ping pong all day then having your dad come home and show us who the best player really was. I live in St. George, when you're in the area call me, I would love to see you.
Love, Carl Lambert

Dear Fran and Family,

Oh how I loved serving with your husband and father in the Wilford Stake Presidency. He was so dedicated and personable in all that he did. He was a great example for me as priesthood man. I'm writing on behalf of Arch Egbert, my husband, and my children. Arch died about 3 1/2 years ago, but over many years Arch was home teacher and Bishop to the McKay family, he performed a marriage ceremony in their home for one of their daughters and we have always considered the McKays as our friends and neighbors. I remember Arch repeatedly asking Bob to not ever cut his beautiful hair too short, as it reminded him of Pres. McKays hair. Thanks for all you have contributed to our lives. Mary Ann Egbert

Dear McKay family, May the Lord bless you at this time of grief. We all will miss this great man. I have known Bob most of my life as I grew up around the corner of where his father and prophet lived on South Temple and P street for many years as our family moved in 1939 to the home on 1st Ave between Q & R Street and where I live now. My husband bought my engagement and wedding rings from him in 1959. When I did history of 27th Ward he helped me correct the history of their house on P street and South temple that Utah State Historical had which was not correct. I visited Bob many times at his Jewelry Store. When my husband died in February 2009 Bob helped me choose some gems my husband had to set in jewelry for my daughter-in-laws and granddaughters. He has been a great friend. I especially send my condolences to his wife Frances and his children but to all of President David O McKay's descendants. Love,
Kathryn MacKay Jones.

I was blessed with the opportunity to meet and care for Robert McKay in the last little bit. Although I only knew him and some of his family for a short time, I am so grateful that I was able to meet them. Robert definitely was a happy and joking man. He would always greet me by saying 'I'm happy you're here." What a great man and I am so happy that I had the chance to know him and Frances even for a small time.

I became acquainted with Mr. McKay when I moved to Utah in 1998 and my watch needed to be repaired. I worked downtown and a co-worker told me about his store. He fixed my watch and became a new friend in the process. He was always so kind and gracious. I had great respect for Mr. McKay as he talked about his family and his business. He continued to fix my watch over the years until he retired. He will be deeply missed to all those who knew him. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dear McKay Family -- My deepest condolences to you in the passing of your father.

I have many fond memories of your parents, having visited their store many times. Just before my husband-to-be and I were married in 1961, I visited the jewelry store to purchase a wedding band. Your father showed me several beautiful bands, one of which had a Florentine engraving around both edges of the band. I really like that one the best, and your father said he like that one as well. Your father was always gracious and most helpful.

May our loving Heavenly Father wrap you in the arms of His love and whisper peace to your souls.

Dear McKay Family -- My deepest condolences in the passing of your father. I have many fond memories of your father and mother as I visited their jewelry store many times. Just before I was married in 1961, I visited the store to purchase a wedding band for my husband-to-be, and your father showed me several beautiful ones -- one of which had a Florentine border engraved around each edge. I liked that one the best -- and your father said that was his favorite as well.

I am so very sorry for your loss. My mother, Elizabeth Hill, was your Dad's first cousin on the McKay side. Your Dad has to be one of the last (if not the last) of that incredible generation of McKay cousins. Your folks were always incredibly attentive to my grandparents when they were alive, and kind to my mother and my brother and I when we'd spend time up at the Old Home in Huntsville. You are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Bob McKay was more than an alumnus fraternity brother; he was a friend. When it was time to buy an engagement ring set (both my fiance and I worked in the Tribune Building), McKay Jewelry was the obvious choice. After my describing my fiance and establishing the price range I could afford, Bob immediately showed me a unique and beautiful solitaire set, then several others. As I think he knew I would, I chose the first set. It has been perfect. I'm sure he gave me more than the standard 15% PiKA discount. He will always be special to our family. Phi Phi Kappa Alpha.

My father, Joseph E Jones, would rollover in his grave if I failed add a great memory. Bob and dad served together in their missions, in Bues Aries, Argentine. One of the last time that they gathered with many Argentine friends was at the Camp Williams Officer Club for an evening of fun and chats with the opportunity of being entertained by the BYU Ball Room Dancers. Many final loves were shared that evening.

Bob was a kind, gentle man who would treat me like a special friend whenever I would stop in the store to greet him. Of the thousands of couples he sold to, he would ask every one of them to stay in touch, let them know how they are doing, and remember every one of them. His business was one of the last mainstays to grace Main Street, and the McKay sign is a city icon that will endure thru generations. I will miss this great man.

So sorry to hear of Robert's death. He was a very sweet person. I found my engagement ring at Kay's...Robert offered to pay for a call to my fiancé...I burst into tears saying "NO". We have returned numerous times for other purchases and needed repairs. May the Lord bless and keep you and yours! Mike and Jeri Ruoti Married 9/8/1971.
