CAROL HANSEN Obituary

Carol T. Hansen 1921 ~ 2010 Carol Enid Thomason Hansen passed away peacefully, on January 12, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on January 18, 1921, in Murray, Utah, the fifth child of Bert Mose and Anna Lovisa Thomason. She was raised in a home where love, hard work, and selfless service were taught and cherished. She graduated from Murray High School in 1939. She was sealed to Charles Randolph Hansen on May 25, 1942, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised six children while living in Massachusetts, Oklahoma, and Utah. They enjoyed a love affair in this life that lasted 41 years until Chic's death in February 1983. Throughout her life, she was a tireless worker whose day usually began at 4 a.m., and lasted until late into the evening. She was an excellent seamstress, a superb homemaker, and a wonderful mother and grandmother. Her cooking skills were legendary in the valley. In the 1960's, she started a family catering business which lasted more than 30 years, and included parties in the Governor's Mansion, the Beehive House, and at hundreds of wedding receptions in two states. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout her life including 14 years as a member of the Relief Society General Board. In 1980, she and her husband were called to preside over the California Oakland Mission. Her greatest service, however, was devoted to her family, neighbors, and ward members. She always looked for an opportunity to bring a home-cooked meal, a loaf of bread, and a word of hope and encouragement to the sick and the lonely. She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Gordon) Gygi, Linda Lowe, Charles R. Hansen Jr., Jeffrey J. (Janene) Hansen, Timothy P. (Frances) Hansen, and Tracy (Mark) Fischer, 25 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, January 18, 2010, at noon, at the Big Cottonwood Stake Center, 1750 Spring Lane, Holla-day, Utah. Friends and family may call on Sunday, January 17, from 6-8 p.m., at the Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive, and Monday, at the Stake Center, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Interment will follow the services at the Holladay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the LDS Missionary and Perpetual Education Funds.

Dear Hansen Family,
I will never forget the encouragement and example of our good leaders in the California Oakland Mission. Sister Hansen was filled with energy and enthusiasm that lifted lives and motivated us all. She has been without her husband a long time and has continued her activities with that same zest. She will undoubtedly be rewarded well for her tireless devotion and gracious service to all she met.

Dear Hansen family,
When my sister Holly van Dam told me of Carol's passing, I had to completely pause, close my eyes and reflect. To keep this brief, may I say BOTH Chick and Carol were a major influence on me AND on our entire family. You were all so blessed to be a family under the love and wisdom of your parents, Chick and Carol. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Hansen Family,

It was an honor to have served in the Oakland Mission with Prisident and Sister Hansen. Sister Hansen brought great joy to the mission and was a true lady in every word and deed. I know I will miss her. It was not until the other day I thought of her brithday and saw that she had died. May God Bless You.

Dear Hansens. While I am grieved for your loss of this great woman, I am overjoyed that she has been reunited with her wonderful husband. I knew the Hansens before I was a member of the Church--and they were instrumental in my baptism. I was--in Charles' words "the most onorthodox baptism" he had ever participated in (well, it was five minutes to midnight on a Sunday).

Nothing but the fondest memories, and gratitude for having known two such lovely people--who altered the course of one young sailor.

Dear Hansen Family,

As a former missionary who served under President & Sister Hansen, please accept my condolences for your great loss. Though I know this is a difficult and sad time in your life, I can only reflect on the rejoicing because of the reunion of your mother & father. I remember how cheerful and encouraging they both were as mission parents & leaders. I always felt that your parents treated every last one of us serving in the Oakland Mission, regardless of our background, as their children. During this difficult time please accept my deepest appreciation for your willingness to share your mother & father with us, the Oakland Missionaries. Looking forward to a reunion with them in the hereafter.

Dave and I were out of town all week and just heard. Our prayers are very much with you for there is no easy way to send a mother to heaven. What would we do without the gospel! Our love and best wishes to you

Dear Hansen Family,

As a long-time member of the Holladay 26th Ward, may I pay tribute to a wonderful woman who blessed so many of us. Carol was an elect lady who lifted us all and made us feel closer to our Heavenly Father.

Receiving a dinner from Carol was like going out to eat at a five-star restaurant. It almost made you want to be needy given the prospect of such a delightful meal.

Much love to you and yours,

Scott Hepper

Dear Hansen Family,
As a member of the California Oakland Mission, your parents had a profound affect on my life and the way that I conducted myself - then and to this day. I have known few people that are the equal to Sister Hansen in her grace, charity and genuine love for those around her.
Along with you, I mourn her passing, but will ever be thankful for a loving Father in Heaven who saw fit to bless my life by making Sister Hansen a part of it!
With love and warmest regards,
Scott Hepper

Dear Hansen family, It was my privilege to be part of the mission staff of the California Oakland Mission when President and Sister Hansen were first called to serve there in 1980. Sister Hansen commissioned me to get the water fall working in the mission president's home. I enjoyed her cooking to the tune of 20 pounds gained while working there and eating meals prepared by her. I am greatful for the time spent with her and President Hansen. Hello to Tracy who hated being called "the daughter" My condolences to all.

Dear Hansen family,
I lived in the 26th Ward and never met a more genteel woman in my life. She always sent a thank you card for anything you did, or bearing your testimony, speaking in Sacrament meeting or even a lesson you taught. She is a woman of many talents and she shared them with everyone. She will be missed. I know she is with out Heavenly Father. I know she is so happy to be with the love of her life, her dear sweet husband. My love to you all and thanks for sharing this fantastic lady with us.

Sister Hansen was such an elegant lady as our mission mom. She was so loved by all of the missionaries. She cooked & served the most delicious meals to the missionaries. It was so sad when President Hansen left us so suddenly back in Feb 1983. I am so glad she is now reunited with her husband. I love you Sister Hansen, thank you for all you did.

Dear Hansens, it was my great blessing to serve in the Oakland mission with your folks. I grew up in a small, remote Indian village in the Interior of Alaska and was still quite backward in confidence and experience when I was called to my mission. Your dad was famous for his one-liners. Just a couple days ago I was remembering a district meeting we had at which President Hansen was present. Whenever the president was in company, everyone of course felt they had to do his part perfectly and use his best manners. As we knelt to pray during the meeting, the pianist hit a note on the piano with her elbow, and she blushed bright red. President Hansen said, "A note of appreciation!" It surely made us all laugh and put everyone instantly at ease.

I remember walking into the mission home as a new missionary in June of 1982. There was a line of about fourteen of us trooping through the door. I have always been mystified by this---as I came through the door, Sister Hansen took my hands between hers and very warmly greeted Sister Gregory---without EVER a glance downward at my nametag!

What a perfect lady, and what a doting, perfect example of a loving and supportive wife. We so much enjoyed visiting the mission home and receiving her gracious attention. And oh, how we missionaries loved President Hansen, ever cheerful, ever encouraging. He liked to call me "Sister Gregorious".

I am teary and sniffling as I write and remember, but I am not sad. I am deeply touched by knowing and being enriched by these wonderful people. Thank you for sharing them with us. I am ecstatic at the knowledge that they are together again! With love and appreciation to your family for expanding and blessing my life very greatly, Zoanne Gregory Anderson

Dear Hansens: I so loved Carol. She was so wonderful to chat with and so caring about everyone. I remember many hours in her home talking and just hanging out. And I will never forget all the help she gave me in making my own wedding quilt. She was well loved and will be missed!

We are saddened to hear of Sis. Hansen's passing but know she is having a joyous reunion with her dear husband. We were so blessed to have Sis. Hansen as our mission mom. She was such a wonderful example of grace and elegance. She taught us so much in the short time we were with her in the Oakland mission. The Hansens will always have a special place in our hearts.

Dear Hansen Family:

It was disturbing to learn of the passing of one of our favorite people. Your mother was a sweetheart and both your parents were good friends of ours.
Your mother was a most cordial, genuine, and interested person. Everything said about her in the Obit is true, except that we would add that she had a great sense of humor.
We enjoyed our years in the Holladay 26th Ward where we got to socialize with your parents and got to know the children.
We loved you then as we do now.

Carol was all that was said in the obituary plus many more wonderful things about her. She was the most gentle, kind, loving person and she exemplfied womanhood. Life is better for those who knew her because of the love she had for others and always thinking and asking if she could be of help to anyone. We feel such a honor to have known her and her husband while living in the Holladay 26th ward. The world could use thousands more like Carol.
