DUANE VIGOS Obituary

Duane George Vigos 1947 ~ 2010 An amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother and son, Duane George Vigos came into this world on July 2, 1947 to George and Anna Lucy Schmid Vigos. He left us suddenly on July 23, 2010. Duane married Jerri Jespersen on April 25, 1968. The miracle of this union brought "the love of his life", daughter, Stephanie Lee Vigos-Evens and "his boy" Nicholas Crist Vigos into their lives. Stephanie and Nick blessed Duane and Jerri with spouse Douglas Evens and "My Mary" Beckstead Vigos. One by one three "rascals" arrived and he became "Grandpa Dewey" to Kendahl Hansen, Skyeler Vigos and Baby Cash Vigos. Duane began his career at Brighton Ski Resort in 1966. A man of immense integrity and a giant in the world of skiing, Zane Doyle, trusted in Duane and he became the youngest Ski School Director in the Intermountain West, fulfilling his dream from 1973 to 1978. Duane later moved to Park City as their Director of Skiing from 1978 to 1987. Duane had an extensive jumping and racing career. He became a fully certified ski instructor in 1970. Duane was the assistant racing coach of the Westminster College Race Team and later served as head coach from 1973 to 1977. He also was an adjoint faculty member at Westminster College. Duane was a National Ski buyer for Sears as well as a member of Sears Winter Advisory Staff. Duane was elected to the Board of Directors of the I.S.I.A. He served as chairman of the Ski School Directors Committee as well as an examiner for the I.S.I.A. Duane was a member of the P.S.I.A. and served on the National Board of Directors from 1982 to 1983. He was awarded his 40 year pin. Your family and friends think back on the glory of the days that have been, we know as we day dream there will be good days again. For when the snows fly and the blizzard winds wail, your friends and family will see your tracks on some trail. The time has come for your pain to heal after the long road you've traveled. Peace is now at your side. Survived by his wife, children, Stephanie (Doug) Evens, Nick (My Mary) Vigos and his three rascals, Kendahl, Skyeler and Baby Cash; sisters, Shirley Cox, Carolyn Vigos; brother, Mike (Tina) Vigos; Jerri's brothers, Jeff Jespersen, Jim (Susan) Jespersen, Jay (Kae) Jespersen and many loving nieces and nephews. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Jerri's parents, Don and Joyce Jespersen. On Sunday August 1, 2010 we will honor Duane in the mountains he loved. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Brighton Millie Chalet, located at 12601 East Big Cottonwood Canyon Road from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Jerri, Stephanie and Nick cannot adequately express their heart filled thanks to Randy Doyle and the Brighton family for their support and generosity in letting Duane return to where it all began. During this challenging time our family would also like to express our love and devotion to our extended family, the Frank Jones Family, the Tom Jones family and the Denny West Family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Special Olympics of Utah, Duane Vigos Memorial Fund at 243 East 400 South, Suite 111, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. There's honor in a well lived life, there's healing in remembering, there's hope in knowing that love goes on forever. Online condolences may be shared at www.cannonmortuary.com

So hard to say good-bye. We will all be home soon. Give our love to those who are celebrating your arrival. I picture you and Tommy hanging out together and it makes me smile. Thanks for being so good to me. Suzanne was a tough act to follow! I know you were at the memorial 'party'. Jerri and the kids gave you an amazing send off. You are such a remarkable man who raised an incredible family. They are all a living testament to a life well lived! I see you in your three little rascals. They love you so. Keep smiling Duane! Until we meet again and God bless your amazing family. You know your friends will take care of them.

My simpathy and condolences to the Vigos family. I share my early memories of ski teaching in Utah under Duanes guidance each time I remember those halcyon days at Park City. Good bye my friend.

We want you all to know that we are thinking of you and want you to know that we love you guys and care about you guys. Duane was a Giant of a Man and yet a softy when it came to his family who he loves more than anything. I have always looked up to Duane and what a great person he is. He will be missed but his memory will always be with those who knew him.
Love Pat Wilkinson Family...

To the Vigos Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. My mother, Lucille Vigos Giles was one of Duane's fathers sisters. I remember when we were just kids and us five cousins, who were all about the same age would get together often with the extended family. Duane was just 5 days older than me. I found a picture of us at Uncle Dick and Aunt Kay's house for Dickie's 6th or 7th birthday party. I thought I would share it with you. It's the only picture I have of all of the cousins together, the original Vigos little rascals. (left to right - Johnny Kent, Rick, Duane, Buzzy (in the back) and Dickie (front)) They were fun days. I wish I could come to the celebration but I just had a triple by-pass and will not be able to. May you find comfort in the memories you have of Duane.

Love Rick and Kimberly Giles
