E. D'On Empey Moore

E. Moore Obituary

E. D'On Empey Moore 5/17/25 ~ 4/23/03  E. D'On Empey Moore 77, passed away peacefully early Wednesday afternoon April 23, 2003, after a lengthy illness. She left mortality surrounded by those whom she loved, and had the greatest influence on. Born May 17, 1925 in Price, Carbon County, Utah to Claude J. and Mabel Claire Taylor Empey, D'On spent her youth growing up in Price, graduating from Carbon High School in 1943. Over the next several years she enrolled in school at the University of Utah (which included training as an Army Cadet Nurse in 1944) and Utah State University. She lived and worked in both Southern and Northern California, eventually enrolling at Brigham Young University in 1954 and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1956. It was while enrolled at BYU she met and was courted by her future husband Hal, who at that time was teaching at Carbon High School and College (later CEU) in her hometown. They were married on July 20, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple. D'On was instrumental in seeing Hal through many years of graduate school, first at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and later at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he received a PhD in 1967. She was blessed with three children, David, Nora, and Alison.  Hal and D'On lived most of their adult lives in Orem while Hal worked in the Department of Mathematics at BYU. D'On was very talented at seemingly anything she did, whether it was sewing dresses for Nora or Alison or knitting a cardigan sweater for Hal or David. She enjoyed family history and archiving family photos in albums to be enjoyed by the entire family. She also utilized her talents in the kitchen, always assuring a well prepared family meal was part of the household each day. D'On prided herself as a teacher of music. She instructed many pupils over the years as their beginning piano instructor, and fulfilled many church assignments with respect to her musical talents. She worked outside the home briefly for the BYU Continuing Education Department from 1978-81, helping manage the Degrees by Independent Study. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life, D'On held several callings over the years ranging from the Relief Society, to the Primary, to being a Gospel Doctrine Teacher for the Adult Sunday School class. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 47 years, Dr. Hal G Moore, a son David Claudius, and daughters Nora (Bret) Hess of Orem and Alison (Samuel) Smith of Eagle Mountain, Utah; along with 13 living grandchildren (a 14th is expected in October). She also has two surviving brothers: LaMar T. Empey (Betty) of Cody, Wyoming and Jay G. (Sharon) Empey of Blackfoot, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, John Henry Empey, and two infant granddaughters. Funeral Services will be held Monday morning April 28, 2003 at the Sunset Heights Sixth LDS Ward Chapel (500 South 600 West in Orem) at 10:00 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the ward chapel. A viewing will be held Sunday evening April 27, 2003 at the Sundberg Olpin Mortuary from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
